The nice young man at the BMW dealer parts counter said that the oil pump/water pump overhaul requires special tools. Is this correct?
Does anyone have any words of wisdom on how to overhaul the oil pump/water pump? My pump weeps water very slightly. The outside of the engine is covered in black goo... Some slow leak, perhaps?
Thank you!

I personally haven't done one of these, but if search here, there have been numerous users that have rebuilt the pumps without the "special" tools.

It's more a matter of being very careful and keeping the seal faces clean and assembling straight and square.

I've done mechanical pump seals of larger pumps(1"-12") and it's not that bad, these are just a much smaller version.

I'd be more inclined to start with a good degrease/cleaning to really find where the leak is. It may be somewhere simple and not the pump seal.....

No special tools required. I did my 93 LT last year.

Search YouTube.

Be careful not to over torque mounting bolts when re-installing.

No gaskets. Just metal to metal. I used Permatex #2 Form-a-Gasket.

Ditto, no special tools required. Standard tool kit plus cleanliness and care.
