Both of my k1100s make a double click when first starting out in first gear. Not every time usually just the first time in the day. I assume it must be a normal thing since both the 72k and 11k mile bikes do it the same way. Does anyone know what causes the odd sound?

The first time you move off after starting the bike, at about 3mph, the ABS does a system check and you should see the red warning lights stop at that point. The clicking is part of that check process.

It can/will also do it at other times than when you first start the bike. You can be out riding for hours and it still can do the self check when moving from a standing stop.
Nothing to worry about, just nature of the beast.

Thanks for the responses guys. I pretty much thought it was a normal sound since both bikes did it the same but it's always good to have suspicions confirmed. After years for riding Goldwings and getting used to their noises it takes a bit of time to get acclimatized to a different kind of bike. Especially for a geezer with hearing aids.
