I searched, but found little on this. I did find where there used to be a tech sticky about clutch cable adjustment, but the link doesn't work any more.
I adjusted the clutch on my K1100LT for the first time last night. Pretty much the same procedure as on my airhead, except for all the usual inaccessibility issues . I just wondered what parts you guys remove, and what tools you use for the actual adjustment of the rod.
I took off the left side cover, the plate that holds the foot pegs, and whatever that next small plate is that seems to mostly serve as part of the exhaust hanging system. That gave me reasonable access to the cable end for measurement and adjustment there, but getting a wrench on the 13mm lock nut was still almost impossible.
I have some fairly good, thin open and box ends, but could not get an angle on the lock nut. I finally used a semi-deepish well socket and a knuckle to loosen the lock nut. I made my adjustment, tightened the locknut finger tight while holding the adjuster bolt, got a tiny bit more on the locknut with an open end, then pulled the clutch and strapped the lever to the grip to keep it pulled. That did seem to hold the adjuster bolt firmly in place, so I tighten the lock nut the rest of the way with the socket and knuckle set up.
It all seemed to work, but what a pain. I wondered if some of you remove more parts, or have found other tools that will work for this. I thought about removing the rear wheel, or the foot peg plate from the right side, but I wasn't sure that would really make much difference.
Clutch feels better, but I'd like to make the job easier next time. Any thoughts? _________________ '93 K1100LT, '89 R100GS |

Thanks guys. Yeah, I know the procedure, I just thought maybe you had found some specific tools or tricks that gave better access. It's one thing to look at a page that shows the parts sitting out on a bench, or a video with a half disassembled, non-abs K100, but I'm talking about laying on my back on the floor in the garage, working on an abs equipped LT 😀. That's OK, I got it done and it's working great! Love all the great information on this site. _________________ '93 K1100LT, '89 R100GS |

Hi Jnclem,
I replaced my clutch and adjusted it.
Same as you, I didn't use any special parts or any special technique.
I don't remember it being too difficult, except perhaps getting these old bones back up after lying on the floor.
I don't think it needs to be adjusted frequently, and normally just checking the gap at the end of the activating arm, is enough, with slack taken up at the lever. _________________ '08 K1200GT
