Hi guys, I wonder if somebody could help me, I have a 92 K1100 LT and broke a clutch cable last October at approximately 105,000k, I fitted a new cable and clutch lever with it on the advice of a dealer, who said the lever should be replaced as the bike had done over 100,000k and was the cause of the cable braking. However, yesterday the new one broke ay the same place with 119,513k's on the clock. The clutch seemed lighter to operate than on my old K100. Any help or suggestions would be appreciated.
Cheers Tricky Trev Sad

Were both ends greased when the new cable was installed?

The lack of lubrication there prevents those barrel ends from smoothly rotating where they are anchored- especially at the hand lever end. So instead of rotating the cable bends each time the lever is pulled which promotes failure at that point.

My K100RS has 112,000 km and where the cable slots into the hand lever looks fine to me

Like Sugarhill said, it is critical to have good lube at the cable barrel at the lever end. DAMHIK I have also heard that sometimes the bore in the clutch lever gets scored up from lack of lubrication. If you have that issue I would think you could give it a polish with a sandpaper roll.

Thanks Fellas, When I installed the cable I used powdered graphite as dirt and grit doesn't stick to it. Perhaps it didn't do the job. This time I'll use good old fashioned grease. Thanks again. Laughing

Trev - DuPont Teflon lube works well, too. Hit it every spring - it will never bind.

You need to change this http://www.realoem.com/bmw/enUS/showparts?id=0536-USA-02_1992_89V2_BMW_K_1100_LT_0526,_0536_&diagId=32_0787#32721451796 not the whole lever. Once in place, the M6 screw (part #9) may not fit in the new teflon bush, you can use a M6 drillbit to ease it but don't drill with it use the other end of the drillbit.

It would at least be worth an inspection, I did have to replace my lever once because the hole that the brass cable barrel fit into was worn out of round and was binding the barrel.......resulting in broken cable.

+1 on the spray teflon to lube the barrel 1 or 2x per riding season...
I tried some of the same moly mix I used on the clutch splines, but it was just plain messy..
