|
|
My KRS didn't come with the BMW toolkit, and I don't want to purchase a new one. I'll need a tool kit for an upcoming trip. So, what tools would I use to approximate the BMW one?
I figure box/open end wrenches, screwdrivers, slip-joint pliers, small crescent wrench. I can use a socket wrench with extension and socket for the rear wheel lugs. All of it carried in a Kathy's Tool Pouch.
Anything else? Thanks! _________________ Mark Rooney

DUCT TAPE! I've used it to do temporary repairs to hard case hinges and hold a smashed headlight lens together.
Maybe some electrical wire and a few connectors. A small cheap voltmeter doesn't hurt either.
3,4,5,6 and 8mm Allen Wrenches - get good ones.
The factory kit also has a spark plug wrench.
Tire repair kit. (Best way to ensure you don't get a flat.)
I also carry a small torque wrench for the pivot bearings and the tools to pull the final drive and swing arm off but that might be going a little overboard.

^^In addition I always carry an adjustable wrench, some pliers, a good locking knife, zip ties and some rags.
And a tire pressure gauge. _________________ Bane of your existence since July 2006

For long trips I throw the following into a Craftsman toolbag.
A set of Metric socket Allen drives
A full set of regular Metric Allen wrenches
A ratchet wrench
Metric sockets long and standard length
Metric wrenches size 5mm through 19mm
Two adjustable wrenches
Zip ties
Duct tape
Rags
Pieces of coat hanger wire (for where zip ties may melt)
Electrical wire
A small hammer
Screwdrivers of varies shapes, sizes and length
While this seems like a lot it really does not take up all that much room, and while (knock wood) I have never needed it all for myself I have helped out some fellow riders. Note: for around town riding I just have the standard tool kit. _________________ 1997 K1100LT

I found this Radio Shack Pocket Multimeter to come in handy several times. It is tiny enough to easily stow away in the tail cowl, very capable, and the batteries last a LONG time. I actually have the version proir to this, but it looks like the only thing they changed was the color of the case.

Almost forgot - make SURE to pick up a spare oil fill cap at the dealer next time through. They are like $2 and having a spare will ensure you never need it. Believe me, forgetting to screw that thing back in at a gas station after adding a sip of oil can lead to a significant dent in an otherwise awesome roadtrip. For only $2 and taking up no space at all, everyone should carry a spare.
You might also want to print off the list of non-OEM replacement parts should OEM BMW not be available and tuck it away somewhere. _________________

Yep, I carry a flashlight and tire gauge at all times in my tank bag, so I forgot those in my list. _________________ 1997 K1100LT

This is my tool kit.
A good way to assess what you need to pack is this...... Everytime you work on the bike, WRITE down what tool you used, so the next time you ask yourself this question, you'll have your answer.
Not shown but I HIGHLY recommend is Rescue tape....
http://www.rescuetape.com/
I also carry a plug kit, compressor, zip ties, LED flash light, a small peice of wire like a paper clip. I never carry rags. That's what my shirt is for _________________ 1993 K1100RS aka The Shop Whore

You would be amazed at the number of riders just the jumper cables have helped

Thanks for all the useful input. I didn't think about Allen wrenches, adding that to my list. I'll have to see if I can find my motorcycle jumper cables. _________________ Mark Rooney

To this already extensive list I would add a headlamp, like a Petzl or Princeton Tec. Its nice to have both hands free. I also carry these 5 in. arc joint pliers:

I use a AA LED MagLite.
While making/eating dinner, it serves as a candle: (The picture is not the LED version but it does the same thing.)
At night, I take the head off and hang it from the top of my tent as a room light.
For setting up camp, repairs, etc.... a Nite Ize headband turns it into a headlamp:
(That's not me, that's the dork from their website.)
They also make good pets:

I wouldn't know what was in my toolkit, never opened it, never needed to so I'm guessing it is brand spankers still.
Contrast that to the Lav toolkit...........

That Italian lady have some issues? The things that you have to put up with for something gorgeous, huh? It has GOT to be worth it.
Teutonic workhorse vs. Mediterranean beauty
BMW K bike- sturdy, eh?
Laverda- lovely to look at.
