Hello All,
1996 K1100RS
First a thank you to duckbubbles for the fan relay information. I installed this this past weekend and it works great.

I want some advice for tires for an Out West trip this summer. I will be traveling about 1/3 interstate miles and 2/3rds paved backroads. Probably going to do about 7000 + miles. I want the highest mileage tire currently available for the RS.

I have only had the bike about 1 year and do not have much experience with tires. I currently have a set of Metzler MEZ4s on the bike that I installed. The front is wearing fast after about 3500 miles. I estimate the tire is 2/3rds gone. What is typical mileage for moderate riding on a RS?
I know that there are many factors that influence tire wear. I just want some input about tires from some of you guys and girls that do high mileage.

Thank you,
Kenan Bible

I had Z4's first on my '94 RS and they were OK but the rear was shot after 5K. They also had a tendency to slip off white lines too much for me. I have Z6's now and they have done 4.5K miles and I would guess thats about halfway through for the rear. The front should be about 50% more than the rear. I don't do any motorway miles. They are brilliant in the wet and as far as I'm concerned I'm not going to bother trying any others when it comes to replace them. It's important to keep the pressures up at around 37/43 for best alround performance.

I got the longest life out of a set of Michelin Macadam 100s (approx 15K miles). I believe their rounded profile was the primary factor in the mileage. On the downside that profile made the steering heavier on what is already a "non-flickable" platform. I don't think that the 100s are available anymore but I hear that the Pilot Road is constructed similarly and would assume that they would provide comparable mileage. Obviously YMMV. FYI I currently ride on Metzler Z6 skins. I pushed them to 10K on the Peaks of America ride a couple of years ago which was past the wear indicators.

I'm eyeing the Pilot Roads. The Pilot Road 2's are now available for something like $30-40 more per end. The 2's are supposed to feature a dual compound - long-wearing in the middle and sticky on the chicken strips.

As it was explained to me, however, the side tread was the only change. The middle tread is the same as the Roads and thus, tread wear should be comparable on both...unless you're one of those hairy-chested go-getters that wears the sides down like...

Going fast in the twisties takes BIG skill.

Only the Reasonists. They believe in an evidence-based world, something called Rationalism. But it's a tiny group, not so influential.

i gotts around 5k on some pilot roads... not the 2s... just the regulars...

they still look good with even wear... they handle good... they feel good... both 1 up and 2 up on all kinds of slabbs and country roads... in the hot... cold... rain and shine... below sea level and at 7000 feet...

i likes them so far...
