| That is not a good idea. The battery should be disconnectd at the BATTERY TERMINALS ONLY; NOT a remote location! BOTH battery cables should be disconnected AT THE BATTERY TERMINALS! This is because some ground, and positive cables, have secondary leads that ground or connect at remote locations away from the battery. Simply removing what appears to be the battery ground cable at the bellhousing could still leave the battery connected to the wiring harness or another part of the bike. If the bike is going to be stored for a while, the battery should be disconnected at both terminals and removed from the bike and stored inside where it will not be subject to freezing temperatures. It should be placed on a "Battery Tender" or equivalent device that senses what the battery charge level is and can maintain a 10 miliampere "maintence charge" when the battery is at full charge. NOTE, standard "trickle type" chargers do not do this and will ruin a battery by overcharging if left on charge for any length of time. Also, always disconnect the negative terminal FIRST when disconnecting any battery. The Negative terminal should be connected LAST when installing the battery, for obvious safety reasons. (This assumes the bike has a negative ground. For any antique bike with a positive ground, reverse the procedure; better yet, change the electrical system to a negative ground type. )- Euripides |
