|

we were to ride to the slovang motorcycle museum today but the big boob weather girls kept saying sat was gonna be the heaviest of the rains...
so... we made plans to ride up there tomorrow... well... when the fog cleared at 7am it revealed a bright and warm fireball which is still burning brightly...
http://www.pashnit.com/forum/showthread.php?t=17
so anyway... one of our clients makes insulation and i noticed some foil backed bubble wrap looking stuff and inquired about it... the reason is i read a thread a while back about folks getting those car windshield sunshades and cutting them down for heat guard on their motorbikes...
they said at 350 degrees that 1 layer of this stuff would attenuate about 50 degrees... so they gave me a giant hunk of scrap to try out...
welcome to my garage... it aint no shoganai pops place or steverinos place but its all i gotts...
i told her... fetch my cooler... snappy now...
layed it out...
cut it to size...
painted the visible parts black...
so its wall to wall... no seams or cuts from front of tank to rear of seat... lapped over the frame rails and cut off at bottom of side covers... 1 hole for fuel pump wire and 1 hole for seat lock... thats it...
we shall see how it works...
i told her... these photos are blue... fix that camera...snappy now...

So where's the ride report? How much difference does it actually make on the road? Of course, since the material was free and you only had to spend a little time cutting it to size and installing it, it's probably worth the cost... _________________ M N B

i was concerned the bubbles would melt if they got got hot enough... everything melts... right... but its not close to any heat sources... just a blanket over the frame...
i got 32 pounds of cloven hoofed beast in the smoker or i would have ventured a little further away... but i did 90 miles... 60 degree... overcast... stopped once to get radiator fan to kick on...
inspected at the end and no melting... will it actually keep the tank and seat and side covers cooler... i dont know... have to wait till it warms up...

I don't get it. I don't have any problem with heat rise on my '94 K1100RS, not even on the hottest day. _________________ 2000 R1100RT

we have several rides in excess of 100 degrees and i have never got the roast that others get...
sometimes the rider part of the seat gets hot but not uncomfortable hot... my legs and ankles and feet dont get the hot blast either...
if i were getting the roast or the blast i would look into the 3 core radiator or a different fan motor or a manual switch or resistor....
so i did it just for the ch1t of it... they had it... they gave it to me... i thought i would try it... its not heavy duty... most likely will work for a while... but not have much of a life span...
what i was thinking is to score a sheet of inner tube thin rubber... cut it to size... glue the foil bubble stuff to the rubber... put it on the bike foil side down... there wouldnt be much weight and the rubber would keep the bubbles from popping...
we shall see if the seat still gets hot... or if i have created a roast or blast situation...

Sounds like you've got a great idea, Johnny! Like you, I don't cook TOO bad in the summertime, but it would be nice to take the edge off. Keep us posted, I'll bet many of us will be doing this as well! |

Johnny:
How many miles on this now? Have you pulled the tank recently to check for meltage?
(Thanks for sending me that piece of this stuff. And thanks for the pepperoni stick you threw in - but I was hoping for 3 or 4 pounds of your smoked pork. ) _________________ 93 LT (x2)

did another coast to desert 1 up today...
i dont know how hot it was out there but i can report i could feel the heat of the sun through my mesh jacket and had to drink lotts o water... im thinking mid 80s most if the day...
i could also feel the engine heat being pushed out onto my boots... so i pulled off and felt the bubble wrap and did a visual inspection...
no noticeable engine heat on the tank or seat... the top side of the bubble wrap was warm but not hot to the touch... the bottom side was hot to the touch... so its working... no signs of melting... still looking the way it did when i put it on...

sonu...
im thinking the 24" would require a splice to make it to the bottom of the side panels... at least the rs side panels if i remember correctly....
ch1t... i dont remember the width... i think it was 34".... i dont know for sure... sorry...

24 should be fine. I cut mine to 22x33 squares before trimming them. It won't make it to the very bottom of the side covers but is more than emough to cover the seam and divert the air out the bottom. So 24" wide material should be fine. _________________ 93 LT (x2)

Thanks Mr Duck and Mr Owstritch
I picked up some from HomeDepot today (only $20). I think it should be fine

Friends,
The $20 Home Depot roll worked out great. The 24" width of the roll is perfect for a K1100LT.
First I cut out a 24"x44" piece and laid it out along the length of the bike.
Then I made cut outs for the tank clips and the "cup" that catches any fuel overflow. Also cut a "slot" for the fuel pump connector.
The tank is moved to the side in the above picture (to the right of the picture) the silver foil you are seeing on the bottom of the tank is what came with the bike.
Finally I made a cut out to hook up the side panel. The blanket tucked neatly behind the K-Guard Heat Shields
I used some Reflectix tape to make things tidy. This tape is also heat reflective and sold right next to the blanket at Home Depot.
I've only had a couple of short rides so far but I'm very happy with the results. The Johnny Blanket works as advertised
Took about 20 minutes to put together.

i put the foil down... the bubbles up...
thinking the foil would reflect the heat away...
the bubbles would help attenuate the heat that made it past the foil... and not melt of course...
since there are no seams and only 1 hole for the fuel pump wires... the whole thing prevents hot air from flowing where i dont want it...
now i gotts abouts 5,000 miles on it... no melting noted and still in good shape... there are some popped bubbles where the seat contacts the frame and the like...
so far so good...
