Hi,
I just purchased a 93 K1100RS that the previous owner didn't ride much (13,000 on the bike) and he had trouble getting it to run for me. He finally got it started and it would idle very roughly, but the engine would die when you gave it gas. I ended up buying the bike anyway and I'm hoping for the best. He did say that the last time he rode the bike was in January but who knows for sure. I am going to contact the local dealer that the previous owner said he had some work done at to see if they have any service info on the bike.
I trailered it home and took off the bottom fairing section to look at the plugs and they were fouled badly. So i went and got 4 new plugs (Champion was the only ones I could find locally) put them in and the bike started right up and ran rough for a bit and them as it warmed-up seemed to run better but still not real smooth.
I removed the spark plugs and they were sooted -up after a few minutes of running and a little test ride down the street. During the test ride when I got on the throttle she took off and ran great but was popping a bit.
Thats were I'm at right now. My next move was to siphon all the gas out of the tank and I'm going to get some fresh fuel and put some Techron fuel injector cleaner in with the gas.
I was also given an new air filter with the bike and the owner really didn't have any service records so I'm thinking that the air filter may be dirty and is making the bike run rich. I know that happens with carburetted bikes but i'm not sure if the computer on a fuel injected bike compensates for that.
Any other things to check or suggestions. This is my first K-bike and I'm not familiar at all with it.
Any suggestions on what else to look for.
Also, what is the easiest procedure to replace the air filter?
Thanks. |

At 13k, I doubt the air filter is clogged - unlesss with mold. K bike air fitlers are way oversized for the engine. My opinion is that 30-40k in a good change interval - especially at $35 a pop. But if you have one, you might as well go for it. Remove the belly pan, remove the right lower and pop the 3 clips. IT ill be pretty obious once you get in there. It's a tight squeeze getting it in and out. MAke sure it seals properly when you put the new one in.
I think you sohuld run the Techron through and see what happens then. I suspect you'll be OK.
Might not be a bad idea to replace the fuel filter too as they can trap water. Remove hte four screws holding the gas cap on and you'll see the fuel filter. Best to replace it with the tank running fairly low unless you like bathing your hands in gas. Don't overtighten the scrwes when putting the gas cap back on.
I'd change the oil too - run Castrol 20/50 (car oil is fine in Ks) until 20k. The consider switching to Mobil 1. Don't run syntheticx until 20k as it doesn't give the rings a good chance to set.
Then ride the hell out of it. (Seriously.) _________________ 93 LT (x2)

Flying Duck,
Thanks for the help.
I think I got a fuel filter with the bike as well but if not I will certainly change it especially since I just siphoned out all the gas from the tank.
I've already got the belly pan and the left side lower off so taking the right lower off is easy.
BTW, the clips and plastic arrow shaped pieces that hold the battery covers on are broken.
Any posts on fixes for this problem? |

Once you've siphoned all of the gas out. Disconnect the fuel lines, remove the gas cap, hold the tank upside down and get ALL of the liquid out of the tank. Even if you siphon all of the gas out, there are little nooks and crannies for water to hide - which can eventually corrode the aluminum and cause cracks along the welds at the bottom seams of your tank.
I don't have an answer on the side covers. _________________ 93 LT (x2)
