I noticed today that its dripping at a good rate. My question is the rebuild route to take. If I buy the $47.95 rebuild kit from Beemerboneyard it looks like it only comes with the piston. Is this correct? If I buy the repair kit piston part number 32722332037 from the picture it looks like it comes with the piston, stop screw, spring, and possibly the seeling sleeve for $55.20. Is this right? Anyone here familiar with this part number and can confirm everything you get with the repair kits? Seems like the extra $5.00 would easily justify the new spring.
Thanks,
Matt |

get the complete kit. Check the price at Chicago BMW - I think I paid $48 for the kit from them. The kit is actually made for an R bike - don't know why they don't like to sell it for a K. _________________ Jim

G'day Guys and girls
Going through the same thing myself.
My front master cylinder started leaking last week. Just changed all the brake fluids after pulling my starter and alternator for checking. my bike is a 97 LT with ABS II. What a PITA to get them out. Remove ABS II from bike to get at them.
Re-assembled the whole lot (both start and alternator were fine). Bleed the whole system front and back. Everything working including the ABS lights in the dash.
Sunday, fine and warm (in the mid 20's C) checked tyre pressure, off I go. About 5km's into the ride I looked down at the right glove box, FLUID, oh poo!.
It was brake fluid. Home I go and check it out. Leaking from the cap near the lever. Pulled the whole master cylinder assembly off the bike and down to my local brake re-sleeving place.
The bore is badly pitted and a new sleeve made to fit. Now just waiting for the rebuild kit containing all the seals needed. Hope that it all arrives in the next week or so as I am off to the Ruptured Budgie rally in May. _________________ Ride safe

hi Matt - sorry - don't remember the kit part #, or, at this point, exactly what was in it. I think there was something in there I didn't need or use. I think there is only one rebuild kit made that'll work on this bike. If you're not sure about which one to get, pick up the phone and call Chicago, A&S or some decent dealer - they'll help you out. _________________ Jim

Matt,
Mine just started leaking yesterday. I changed my brake fluid over the winter and installed new stainless lines. I went out for a ride last night and it was leaking. I went out for breakfast this morning and drip, drip drip. I just changed my rear master over the winter because it was leaking. I fell your pain!!

Earlier today I completed the fork seal replacement and installed the front fender extender, and after 50+ miles it seems as though I did it allright. Replaced just about everything and I sure am glad I had new seal retaining rings to put in. After getting the old rings out the angled ends were trashed. What a B. After trying my luck with many different tools, my leatherman with the awl using a flicking up motion that caused me to bleed did the trick. Oh how lucky I felt to get those Btards outs; tears of joy after about 45 minutes of worry. Is there a special tool that is made for that type of retaining ring? Other than those rings the fork seal job was quite easy.
Now off to order a master cyclinder rebuild kit. I read that it is possible to just remove, clean, maybee steel wool the piston bore and reassemble to stop it leaking. Has this approach worked for many? Anything tricky to pay attention to when disassembling/reassembling the master cyclinder?

Check the inside of the cylinder bore - very often it will show signs of mild corrosion, pitting etc which will damage the seals on the new piston. Smooth out the corrosion with fine sandpaper e.g. 400 grit used wet.
Some people have reused their original piston after this treatment. I bought the kit, removed the corrosion from the cylinder bore and no leaks at all since then.
Success will depend on the actual state of the cylinder bore and the amount of effort required to get it smooth.

Hi, Matt,
The "repair kit" part number is 32 72 2 332 037, and is almost $70 from MaxBMW's website. It is a Magura part, as BMW does not make the brake stuff, but buys it from Magura, Brembo, etc. I bought a kit from Magura USA, but they might balk at selling you the part since you are not one of their "dealers".
As for repairing the master cylinder, I won't repeat it, but I'll direct you to my post on Front Brake Master Cylinder Replacement posted on Sept. 24, 2006.

$55.20 here: http://www.chicagobmwmotorcycle.com/store/advanced_search_result.php?keywords=32+72+2+332+037&osCsid=284bb9b53919ae25edc6c8c4eba4f3c7&x=33&y=12
Parts have gone up in price a bit - so that's about right. I'm sure I got it for $48.00 or so. _________________ Jim
