Friends,

Here is a picture of the two lines below my gas tank. Picture is taken standing on the left side of the bike.

The flapperectomy instructions located at http://www.ibmwr.org/ktech/fuelflap.shtml state "Find the vent line that runs from under the tank to the front top of your crank case. Cut it about an inch above the crank case and plug with an old golf tee or a machine screw"

Since I'm not much of a motorhead I need to ask: Which of these two am I supposed to cut? Embarassed The one on the right that ends up in the foreground or the one on the left that goes to the middle of the bike?

Thanks,

Sanjiv

Sanjiv - DON'T cut those Exclamation Exclamation Exclamation 'Shocked' Those are the fuel lines.

The other lines are the rain vent and the tank vent - small ones that come from sort of the center of the tank. Search for flapperectomy here at K11.

I did not plug any of the lines. I have the air accumulator installed - both the rain vent and tank vent go to the air accumulator - then one line from that down behind the right footpeg plate.

I guess if you don't have an air accumulator, you could just run both lines down the right side somewhere - but the air accumulator seems to be the practical solution. Make sure when you slide the tank back in place that the vent hoses are not pinched!

The tank vent used to go through a check valve down to the right front corner of the crank case - there's a nipple there - I put a rubber cap on that.

Thanks Jim,

You saved me from some excitement.

The thing is there are no other lines coming out of my tank. Maybe BMW fixed this problem by the closeout model?

There are two small nipples on the other side of the tank but no lines attached to them. I'll take a picture in the morning and post it.

Cheers,

Sanjiv

Those two nipples should have lines coming off them and those are the ones that Jim is talking about. I know on mine that they come off very easily when you remove the tank so I put hose clamps on them. Also if you are not looking for them they can go unoticed sitting in the rest of the wires on top of the frame. I removed the check valve and plugged the line going to the top of the crankcase with a stainless steel bolt.

If you think it will help, when I get the time, I’ll take some pics of the newly routed lines after we did a “canister-ectomy” i.e. removal of the accumulator.

Also, after doing that we drilled a small hole in the filler neck. This allows about another ½ gallon of fuel to be added to the tank.

I think leaving the anti-reflex flapper in place is a good thing.

Friends,

Looks like I do have an air accumulator

The two nipples dump into this & the air accumulator has a tube that exits next to right passenger footrest as mentioned earlier. I could not see the tube until I picked up the air accumulator.

Flapperectomy is now complete and offensive flapper is removed

This gave me the opportunity to look inside the tank. Seems like the fuel filter is pretty easy to replace

Thanks all for the hand holding

Sanjiv
