OK, but not the usual one
Stupidly I managed to buy GL4 gear oil today and openned it before checking. It should have been GL5.
Any gear oil experts out there? Am I OK to use the GL4 stuff or is this a no no?

GL5 spec oils are high in sulphur (a caustic lubricant) to give high performance under severe load.
This is damaging to brass or bronze components.
GL4 spec oils are benign, but lower performance in-extremis.
The BMW 'box is approved for GL5, so will not contain brass/bronze components.
The GL4 may be OK to use, but out of spec
For the sake of £5 for a bottle of oil, I would not risk it. _________________ C1 200 (2001)
