I have a strange one for you guys. Engine fires up from cold as normal but as soon as I get on the bike the engine dies. I can start the engine straight back up but I have noticed that any sideward movement makes the engine stutter and I have to rev the throttle to keep it alive. If I rock it forwards and backwards on the forks it seems OK, just the sidewards movement makes it cutout. Running the motor on the centrestand is fine and it revs cleanly - it's just moving the bike causes the problem.

Sometimes the fuel pump won't prime either with the engine off but a shake of the handlebar sideways sometimes makes it work, but othertimes not. Sitting on the seat also can make the engine stutter and die. I have cleaned the connector to the fuel tank and moving that with the engine running makes no difference. Can anyone else think of where I should start to look? I think it must be an electrical connection but could it be anything else that might be movement related? The sidestand cutout switch is bypassed. If I have a fuse just about to go which one would kill the engine?

As always I appreciate any guidence coming my way.

Sounds like the cables to the Ignition switch. Do all the dash lights go out when it dies? Hardest bit is getting the switch off. My guess is, that if you tug at the cables to the switch It will end up permanently dead. This has happened on 2 out of the 3 K11's i have owned. PM me for a chat on how to do it coz I ain't typing all night.

No Tim, the dash lights stay on - not even a flicker. I think I need to really check the fuel pump wiring carefully. The alarm has an imobiliser (sp?) but I have no idea where that is wired into the ignition nor if that would cause a problem once the engine is actually running. If I can't find anything definitive I will just have to go through every connection and earth with the engine running and hope I find it.

Could it just be a bad fuel pump?

Easy to replace and not too costly.

I helped a GB owner recently, whose fuel pump was apparently faulty, turned out there was an extra relay between the FP relay & the tank, which was part of the immobiliser. Once he took the tank off the extra relay was obvious.
Tip :- get a 21 watt lamp with croc (alligator) clips & 2 foot of wire, put one side to earth (ground) clip the other to the FP feed pin & waggle away, saves running the engine & the lamp flashing will be more immediate than waiting for the motor to hiccup.

Great tip Tim - thank you. My thoughts have been sidetracked by a gearbox leak now so I'm going to have to remove the tranny and see if I can fix that first. Just waiting now for the third item to fail!

After a shorter search than I had feared it turned out it was the "Brain" causing the engine cutout - dirty connectors. Cleaned up the connectors with fine emery paper and alls well again.

After you got them clean and working again I might suggest some dielectric grease in the connector to help inhibit moisture from getting in there again.
