I finally got my tags and took out my newly acquired 93 K1100RS for its maiden run and after a few minutes on the road it ran beautifully. I took it out tonight for a 24 mile run I am very pleased. I thought I was going to have all kinds of issues as I had mentioned in my first post about 3 weeks ago but taking the advice from this list and a friend who is an auto wholesaler and gets cars that run like crap just from sitting I decided to just ride it first and see if that didn't work and it certainly did. I will now proceed to change all fluids and check over everything. I did clean-up the leaking fork tube and tried the 35mm film negative cleaning trip and I'm hoping that may have cleaned out the dirt and stopped the leaking. time will tell.
The riding position is hard on my wrists and my hands started to tingle badly. I know pair of "grip puppies" will help some but I'm wondering if bar risers/backs would help a lot more. Is there a source for them that will not facilitate changing cables brake lines etc.?
The levers may also be causing me a problem. After the ride I adjusted the brake lever to be closer to the grips and less of a strain (reach) for me. I also think the clutch lever is bent as its a pretty far reach for me and the angle is not anywhere close to matching the angle of the brake lever even though the brake lever is adjustable. It looks like its bent forward. Does anyone have or could they take a good photo of the clutch lever showing the angle of the bend that it should be possibly while sitting on the bike? |

Found another local owner and went over and compared bikes and my clutch lever is not bent. |

Try modifiying your riding position. My hands used to get numb but a few things helped and I cna now do 12+ hour days on the RS:
Bend at the hips, not at the waist.
Stick your chest out while riding. It seems weird and not very natural at first but it really does help reduce the pressure on your hands.
Try to kep your arms and hands relaxed.
Take your hand off of the clutch and sit up and stretch every once in a while. _________________ 93 LT (x2)

Duck,
Thanks for the suggestions. I will try them out.
Took the bike out for another short run to get fluids up to normal operating temp and then came back and drained and refilled engine oil, transmission and rear drive. Once I use of most of the fuel up I'll remove the tank and change the coolant.
Am I correct in the fact that I must remove the fuel tank to get to fill the cooling system? |

yesser... pull the tank back and the radiator cap will be kinda under your right grip...
motoleo... check out this link...
http://bmwsporttouring.com/ubbthreads/showflat.php?Number=80560
my comfort changes with small corrections... such as what bar position im trying... which seat im trying... how im sitting... how i have my boots on the pegs... even small things like how i have the wind deflector adjusted... believe it or not... what unders im wearing has something to do with it too... amongst other things...
my next to little finger on my right hand would go numb straightaway... not my hand... just that finger... but after riding with the numb finger it seemed like it would start taking the others with it and eventually the hand sometimes...
i installed a throttle lock so i could take my hand off the grip... that finger still goes numb... riding and even driving the truck and at other times too... freaky aint it... however with the throttle lock and taking my hand off the grip i can get it back before it starts taking the others with it...
i installed gel pro grips with grip puppies and manic salamander super heavy bar end weights too... these mods have reduced buzz... have delayed that finger going numb... and pretty much stops any death grip numbness which may occur when splitting lanes or descending the twisties from 11,000 feet 2 up...
i tried bar backs even though i was not having any issues... just wanted to see what they were all about... i think the stock bars when adjusted high work best for me... better feel... better input... no ergo problems... however i have been too lazy to take them off... perhaps tomorrow...

Hi ya motoleo
You've got some real good advice here.
I'll add to this with my 0.02. (which reflects what others have said)
I'm a 'tank climber' which takes nearly all my weight off the handlebars.
I flex in the hips and back and shift my weight on the pegs.
For the straights and slab I relax my postion so that I'm more up right and still keep most of my weight off the grips.
All this from someone who has had bi-lateral carple tunnel releases. _________________ 1993 K1100RS aka The Shop Whore

I just bought a 1993K1100RS.
It had a bar extender bracket, machines aluminum. Up about 1 1/2: & bacj about the same. I took them off ASAP. Not my position at all!
I'm 5' 10" 185# & have a 1981 R100RS that's been riden to every state.
Anyway's, you want to try the brackets? You can haeve em' if ya want.
If they do not work out, just pay it forward.
Let me know. _________________ 1993 K1100RS that I'd rather be riding FAST!

In addition to the great info given, I'd reccomend Gel gloves as well, they take some of the buzz out.
I also have barbacks that sound like the previous posters set up, I found they helped a bit, I sit just a bit more upright and it helps take some of the weight of my wrists. I'm 6'0. _________________ Steve
