Hi everyone,
I was wondering if anyone has had trouble with the gas gauge. The needle on mine started to sway back and fourth between 1/4 of the gauge in movement. I replaced the gauge with another OEM unit that has the later dampening added into it. The gauge works better but still sways a lot once I am down to half a tank of gas. I am thinking it might be the unit inside the tank that is bolted down and sits on a gasket? Could it be anything else? Many thanks :>) _________________ Dom |

I had the same issue with my fuel gauge. Ended up tossing it (and the coolant temp gauge as well) and replacing them with VDOs (~$25 ea). Problem solved. _________________ Paul

Hey there Dom, the only issue that I have had with my fuel guage has been with the light socket not playing well with the LED replacement. No issues with the needle, accuracy???? well that's why we go by mileage anyway, right?
Ride safe

I had a somewhat similar problem with my k100. The gas gauge would seem to work fine going down from full to half then when it got to just a little below half it would drop almost instantaneously to empty then back to half then 1/4 and the needle would flop a bit; just tried to ignore it while riding.
Did some major maintenance on the bike this winter and left the tank off for about 2.5 months resting on its left side and since then the gauge has been working normally (or perhaps it was a sending unit problem), although I would never trust it to gauge fill-ups.
I have a VDO temp gauge and its needle sometime bounces but most of the time it is well damped.

Hi Dom,
I just repaired something similar; My gauge would indicate full when filled-up but after burning the first litre (1/4 gall) started to sway between allmost full and empty. Some miles later, it dropped to below empty. I replaced the gauge, with no effect. It turned out that the sending unit inside the tank was broken. The sending unit is a wirewound resistor of which the wire had broken just below the full position.
I repaired it by tying the wire that remained below the break to the winding just above the break and solder them together. It is a very fine wire, that solders badly. Good eyes (magnifying glass), soldering skills and a steady hand are essential.
At this moment it's working fine.

Thanks everyone,
The sending unit inside the tank ended up being shot. Under close examination, the brass arm concact on the sending unit broke concact at low points on the scale. _________________ Dom |
