My speedometer is correct, now it's not, now it is...

Due to the innacuracy of my speedometer, (and because I am a geek) I almost always ride with my gps and ignore the speedometer needle.

HOwever, while on a ride yesterday I looked down and noticed that both my GPS and speedometer read 60 mph! I thought Wow, my speedometer is all of a sudden correct. A few miles later while still doing 60, I look down to see my speedo reading 40 mph. Later in the ride my speedo is reading about 5 mph under the actual speed.

You get the idea, it's broken. Has anyone else had this issue and how do I go about fixing it or should I even bother.

Yes Drake I know... If I tear the speedometer apart, it would be a great time to add your led kit. I will certainly consider that but I probably won't mess with the speedo unless it's an easy and inexpensive fix.

I had some similiar problems with the tach. Cleaning and applying dielectric grease to all the electrical connectors I could find and replacing the battery fixed it.

+1

Doesn't hurt to pull the sensor out of the final drive and clean it either. Probably not the cause but won't hurt.

My speedo (or tach, I don't recall) did this when the sun was shining on it directly. If I noticed when it was obviously not reading correctly, I would shade it from the sun and within seconds it would move to a more realistic indication.

If this seems to be the case with your bike, I'll tell you how I fixed mine, if not I won't bore you with the details....

Same thing with my tach. Direct sun causes something to distort (saw a write-up on it, but can't remember details) either the clear lens or the black dial.

Try this:

The black dial separates from the clear lens, or was in my case.

For the heat syndome you can place 1/4 strip of rubber around the inside of the lens - that will keep it from warping up into the needle.

Other hints:

Only ride in shade. Razz

Put a towel or something over the cluster when parked in the sun.

If you're thinking of getting into the cluster, order Drake's LED kit first. Then while you've got the cluster apart to install that, carefully take the gages apart, slowly peel the black numbered portion of the display from the clear plastic. I used some generic super-glue and spread an even, thin coat on the plastic, placed the black numbered gage "film" back on, and set an unabridged dictionary on top of it and didn't touch it until I put it together the next day. I have never had the display bubble and hang up the needle again......but first determine that this is the true cause of your errant display, I don't like it when people hunt me down for sending them on a tangent.

Yes, I was riding east on a sunny day at about 6:00 pm. In fact I had ridden about 60 mile due east and then the speedo problem happend.

This is very good to know. I will keep an eye on it. If it becomes a real problem, I'll tear into it.

thanks for the great info!

Although he is not an arrogant tool like I am, Drakes LED setup for the cluster is le pwn.
