A book I have- "BMW K-series Motorcycles" by Mick Walker and Peter Dobson has several pictures of early K bikes in race trim, and some more of proposed modifications to the line. Published in 1989, it just stops with the K1. A good read about the development of the series if you can find a copy.
The later bikes were never developed into racers, probably because of their weight and low power output, at least compared to the competition.

Actually, BMW couldn't afford to sponsor racers after they found out how much parts and spline lubes cost! _________________ 93 LT (x2)

I'm sorry but why not just buy a Japanese sport bike cause that's what it looks like. _________________ Scott Hespelt, '94 K11LT

That is a gnarly looking bike.
I was just curious because I have looked but have found no info about them ever being raced. I do know that it was the first production bike to go over 200 mph but that was with a turbo charger attached.
It just seems that the engine (while I think it is hugely powerful) is not running to its full potential. I know that the EU has or had a 100 bhp limit for motorcycles and that is perhaps why both the 100 and 1100 are limited to 100 bhp. These engines are built like tanks, and while they are as heavy as a tank, I think they are capable of a lot more horsepower, say 25 - 50 more. Which if the Bavarians were racing them then there might be some ways to coax that extra hp out of them. YOU CAN NEVER HAVE TOO MUCH POWER, bwahahahaha.
Chips seem like a waste of time as the motronic brain counteracts any advantages an after market chip might bring to the bike. My K100 had some chip from Australia (Harden?) which was useless. I put the original factory chip back in and noticed absolutely no difference in performance.
Thanks,

I am in the process of trying to repeat the 200 MPH K Bike. I have a 1985 K100Turbo. It is the competition turbo with 8 injectors. It is the same setup used to set the record back in 1986 and 1987. The only thing I cant reproduce is the fairing used back then. This bike was original sold as a complete bike by Luftmiester. (aka Matt Capri ) When I got the bike the previous owner had remover the turbo and had the bike set up back as a non turbo. He was not able to get it running as a non turbo. I have since gotten it running as a nonturbo bike and am working on putting the turbo back on the bike. The previous owner also lost the fuel controler for the additional 4 injectors. When I tried to get info from Mr Capri he directed me to RB Racing who was the designer of the bike. When I went to them they didnt want anything to do with BMWs or their owners. If you look at their web page you would think they are still working on BMWs but they are not. Trying to get any info from RB was like asking to do his best girl. He was not very willing. I am still looking for any and all info on the turbos from back then and any help is appreciated. I am hoping to have the bike running at the Flying mile next year if I can. (depends on funds like everything else in this world) Sorry this got so long winded but it is a special project to me.

Ron,
From what I have heard, RB did all the development of the K-bike turbos back in the 80's. Matt Capri seemed to take the credit and that may have contributed to the falling out they had. I didn't know RB was still in business and Luftmeister has been gone for a decade, I suppose.
I have one of the 7%-11% gearsets that Luftmeister sold and was running it until recently. You would need the 7%-14% gearsets with a 2.54 final drive gear to have 200 mph capability, and about 150 more HP.
A goal of mine about 15 years ago was to get an honest 150 mph out of my bike. This was the 2 valve K engine with higher compression, lightened crank, retimed cams and taller gears. It would do it. But top speed doesn't do it for you very long, at least on public roads. Once I saw it, I was satisfied and haven't done it since.

Ron,
That sounds like a really cool project. I've been keeping my eyes open for a K-Bike turbo but they seem to be very rare. I am also watching for just a plain turbo unit (with all the parts) but again it is very rare indeed.
I've been been up to RB Racing's web page several times and the content indicates, at least to me, that he would be very difficult to work with. Comes across as exceedingly arrogant.
I wish I could be of help but I know far less than you about the turbo set up. Only suggestion I could think of would be to find a very good automotive machine shop and see if they could give any help.
