One of my valves has burnt out She kept running though, so at least I wasn't left by the roadside.. Not as much of a disaster as it could have been though, because I was going to swap the head over anyway, due to the oil consumption..
One thing after another, this bike was made on a Friday or Monday.. _________________ 1992 K1100RS - Red and gold. |

Hi there, don't know as yet which one it is, just that the exhaust sucks instead of blows on one of the cycles.. It's in the menders at the moment.
I have approx 50k miles, it happened while overtaking at high revs. _________________ 1992 K1100RS - Red and gold. |

In theory they were checked at the 30k BMW service, but I wasn't there, all I have is the stamp in the book.. For all I know, they never were.
At the end of the day, it happens. My colleague's ZX12R just had the exact same thing at 10k miles, and I ended up with one years ago on a CX500, though that ended with a sculpture named "Valve (with piston)"
Maybe a stem seal had gone, causing a hotspot, and the smoke I'd been getting, maybe it was just bad luck, but I'll be glad to get the head changed over. _________________ 1992 K1100RS - Red and gold. |

I take it all back, it wasn't a burnt valve, one spark plug had completely failed! New plugs and it's running like a dream. And Russ at Bemer Bikes was good enough not to charge the earth for finding this out and replacing all of them. We still puzzled over the wierd exhaust behaviour, but noone can deny these are quirky bikes..
By the way, have any Brits here got an exhaust going spare? Mine's started to blow again and Motorworks want 180UKP for their second hand example, which is extortionate in my view. Willing to pay good money for a decent one though.
Cheers! _________________ 1992 K1100RS - Red and gold. |
