Well we all know of the short commings of the speedo .. and i got off with a " slow is down and get it fix type of ticket"
i have purchased a sigma bicycle computer . i installed the thing and placed all the setting correctly but i still can not get the dam thing to pair up or work while going down the road..
i would like to know if any anyone has purchased something other than GPS to montier their speed.

So, are you saying that you rode with a speedo which you knew was faulty ?
This is an FAQ
You are fitting a $20 bicycle speedo on a $2,000+ motorcycle
If I recall, the Sigmas do not have a backlight - have you fitted it under the vanity light for night time riding ?
As your footer says - 'fix the problem'. You can buy a second hand speedo head for under $100 on eBay, and there are likely several US members here with a spare you could have at a decent price.

I recommend getting a GPS.
I had doubted the GSP was right until I tested it.
I asked a LEO for help. I rode towards him while holding a steady 60mph on the speedo.
When I asked him what he chocked me at, he said 56mph.
That was exactly what the GPS read!
Now, I NEVER even look at the speedo, just the GPS. _________________ 1993 K1100RS aka The Shop Whore

My speedo reads 5mph higher so I ride accordingly. _________________ Bane of your existence since July 2006

So does mine. Confirmed by GPS. GPS compared to 3 other car/truck spedos for accuracy, very accurate. _________________ Ride safe.

The speedos on our bikes are easily adjusted. Had mine done on the third try. Yeah, it's a pain to do but then it's done forever. _________________ Paul - '93 K11/12RS (sold), 2002 R1100S BCP and '03 RC51 KOG 29 |

How far off is your speedometer? Most of them read about 5 mph fast - you're actually going 5 mph slower than it shows.
Either take it apart and adjust it, or get a gps. I know the speedometer on my bike is 5 mph fast - I use the gps anyway - and a cruise control. _________________ Jim

This is a universal conspiracy - every auto maker for the past 60 years has produced a speedo which over-reads. This is calibrated into the mechanism at the design stage.
Certainly here in the UK, they are set +10% over for safety reasons.
The airhead R80/R100 TIC models offered no adjustment. For police use they were fitted with an additional, calibrated speedo.
The original speedo was reconnected when they were sold back into civillian use.
The K bikes are re-calibrated by a company in the centre of the UK, and are guaranteed accurate to +/- .5% They are retested every 6 months.
So, it can be done, and your GPS is a very accurate tool to calibrate your speedo. _________________ C1 200 (2001)

Your speedos are not off by 5 mph - they are off by a percentage - usually approaching about 10%. IF you can get a handheld or other GPS and a tape head demagnitzer or soldering iron then it is pretty easy to do. (aside form having to remove the speedo.)
I have my bikes calibrated so they only run 1 or 2 percent fast. So when my speedo reads 70 I"m doing 68-69. This way running an indicated 10 over on my speedo puts me just under speeding tax territory. I lock my cruise in at that speed and am good to go when doing non-twisty stuff.
As Shogs pointed out, a GPS is the best way to really know how fast tou're going. _________________ 93 LT (x2)

That's because cops aren't used to seeing a HD go 7 over.
In WA state, aside from school zones and small towns they generally won't ticket you until you hit 10 over. Although that might change for bikes given the recent increase in accidents/fatalities. _________________ 93 LT (x2)

I've been using a speedohealer with good results.

Using a speedo healer changes the number of pulses and screws up your odometer so your bike will rack up miles faster on the odometer than actual. Calibrating your speedo gets the speedo accurate and keeps the odometer accurate. _________________ 93 LT (x2)

I calibrated my speedo by following the instructions contained in the various articles under the heading of "Instrument Cluster" here:
http://www.ibmwr.org/ktech.shtml
Particularly the following articles - the second of which contains a link to the essential photo:
http://www.ibmwr.org/ktech/speedo-adjust.shtml
http://www.ibmwr.org/ktech/speedo-adjust2.shtml
If I can offer one tip - read and understand the adjustment in degrees carefully. I over adjusted mine by turning the pot anti-clockwise by 90 degrees (which made the speedo needle hardly move). 45 degrees anti-clockwise proved the correct degree of correction - to the extent that the bike is indicated to be travelling at exactly the speed displayed by the various radar controlled speed advisory signals around here. A good guide to speedo accuracy is when the speedo needle is pointing in exactly the same direction as the rev counter when in 5th gear.
If you carry out this exercise once (rather than the twice I did it) then it is straightforward and there was not dismantling of fairing or anything else required on my bike.

Another approach i you have a handheld GPS handy.
1) Pull the speedo sensor. Turn the bike on (not running, just on). Put the soldering iron near (but not on) the speedo sensor. Wait until the needle stabilizes. Record this speed. We'll call it Speed A. That is what your speedo indicates with a 60 cycles per second rom the speedo sensor.
2) Put the speedo sensor back in and go or a ride. Get the bike running at a contant Speed A from above. While keeping your speed constant = look at the GPS speed reading. That is your actual speed when you're getting 60 Hz rom the sensor. Call that Speed B.
3) Take your speedo apart as described above and turn the potentiometer about 45 degrees Disconnect your speedo sensor and put the soldering iron near it again. Fine tune turning the potentiometer until your speedo reads Speed B wit hthe soldering iron.
4) Put everything back together. _________________ 93 LT (x2)

For those on this side of the pond (England) we have 50Hz (cycles / sec) so the speedo will read 5/6ths of stateside levels. It doesn't actually matter unless people start comparing their readings.
It doesn't need to be a soldering iron either, anything mains powered that emits a magnetic field will do. i.e. phone charger or other Power supply. _________________ Regards Tim,
