Hi everyone,
I haven't posted much in a long time. Working six days at a dealership is killing all of my time. I am the only salesman at my dealership.
My news: I am breaking down and buying a new 2008 R1200GS. I have a week to think about trading in my trusty K11 or paying the bigger payment and keeping the olde Uboat as a spare. In November, I would have owned the bike 12 years. It has been a great bike and a good friend. The K11 site has been even more reliable then the bikes themselves. I have had the pleasure of talking to and meeting wonderful people from all over the U.S. and abroad. Ted has always been awesome and has personally given me great tips and suggestions over the years. The deal on the GS is just too good to pass up. I always has a soft spot for the GS since the R100GS in the late 80's.
Anyway, I ll try to post some pics of the new GS, for the Dungeon ofcourse :>) But first I have to think long and hard about keeping the K11 or not, I wish money wasn't an issue, but it always is in the end _________________ Dom |

For the amount of money you would get for it combined with the reliability and low maintenance costs of the K11 why not keep both?
I love the GSs as well, but I think they are overpriced and heavy.

if it were me... i would keep the motobrick...
the top fives reasons...
1... im gonna need the motobrick several weeks per year while waiting on gs warranty parts from china to arrive by container boot...
2... i would also get the longest extended warranty available and roadside assistance with unlimited towing...
3... i would also get a hard copy of the anonymous book and a hard copy of the non anonymous book and keep them on my body at all times...
4... i would also get a satellite phone with a crank charger and a personal emergency beacon and keep them on my body at all times...
5... i would also get street tires and ride it only on the street only on dry days...

Hey Dom,
These guys will even talk to you if you buy a couple of oversized
Japanese scooters...DAMHIK
My Twin Cities riding partner had his 1200 GS in the shop for over
6 mo. waiting for one of 5 onboard computers to arrive from the
Fatherland...
You may want to stick with the Devil you know, right JO??
Good luck whatever you decide. _________________ Kent

DAs Boot.
The GS sure is a fantastic bike! Maybe the best BMW today, but the huge amount of black boxes that command everything scares me.
The idea of keeping the RS, to "just in case...", looks a good idea to me.
And more, the RS have aluminum fuel tank. That says a lot about a bike construction.

Johnny O, I'll probably miss you most of all
The 2008 model GS has had a lot of upgrades that BMW is advertising and keeping quiet. I still plan on keeping my flare pistol handy, but the deal BMW is offering is too good to pass up. I wish I could afford to keep the olde Boat, it was an awesome bike and will be sadly missed. My wife is even more upset about letting it go then I am. I hope it will find a good home, even if it doesn't the bike should be trouble free for many miles. I put on a new rotor, caliper and pads after the fire So it should be all set
I'll post a few pictures from the fire damage and of the new bike. I'll be sure to put on a bunch of stickers and buy an Aerostich suit for the photo shoot, just for Duck!!! Just kidding, I am not a big fan of many of the GS riders either. _________________ Dom |

Did you mean not advertising?
Why would they do that? Are they afraid the upgrades will break down or fall apart? _________________ Jim

I heard they're throwing in a cozy weekend at a B&B with Ewan and Charley.
And you gots to have a locator beacon too if'n you drops your bike. The crack BMW dealer technicians will then swoop in with a Chinook helicopter and help you get it back on the sidestand. _________________ 93 LT (x2)

Sold the K11RS last year and, after toying with a rather disappointing Pan for 3months, bought an R1150RT. A year on here's my tu'penny worth.
If a fantastic, low mileage K11RS turned up I'd probably take it. The build quality and looks of the 1150RT (low and bad) prevent any real pride of ownership for me.
The RT is an accomplished machine but too many half done developments (The vents in the fairing or lack or self cancelling for examples) The seat is brutal and at 5' 9" I have to have it on max height otherwise it folds your knees at an awkward angle. On the lowest, which I need, it's like an easy rider chopper. Where's my adjustable bars? The R1150RS may be viable the non servo brakes are scary (I had one) and the fairing pretty but useless.
The newer 1200 has a few details corrected with even worse build quality and too wide again. What has happened at Beemer?
Probably not helped by my spending too much time on duel carriageways and traffic but with out pride of ownership I may as well by a scooter. _________________ Cheers,

Interesting feedback Marti - which Pan - 11 or 13, and why ?
I have several old group reviews from the mid-90's, and the LT always came out slightly ahead of the ST 1100 overall _________________ C1 200 (2001)

Dom, do what makes you happy.
Just because you don't own a K-bike doesn't mean you can't hang out here or in meatspace.
All that matters is that you're riding. _________________ 1993 K1100RS aka The Shop Whore

There we go. 2010 Fourth Annual K11OG National Rally. May as well start planning.
Of course, Das Boot will have a GS, HP2 Sport, 2010 GT and three kids by then. We'll let him join us anyway. Since he'll own the dealership by then, he'll have his crack sales staff cover the sales floor.
Ha! As if the missus would let him out of the house: "You've got diaper duty, dear." |

Dom, don't leave and we won't miss you. Whether you're riding a GS, RT, hell, even an ST - we hope you hang around.
Although if you obtain an FLH, you'd be too cool for us. _________________ tlp

For me the Pan/K11 debate could be summed up by comparing something like a pannier. The ST1100 luggage looked great on the bike but was too small and very poor quality. The whole bike was built to a low standard and then sold at a premium price. Bolts mashed and everything rusted.
Also, there's no getting away from the unnecessary weight. The mass was the first consideration at every manoeuvre. Using it daily just made getting the thing out of the garage a chore not a pleasure.
Good (complex) brakes, low speed balance and excellent under-seat fuel were it's few redeeming qualities. _________________ Cheers,
