Left for the BMW national rally in Gillette, Wyoming at 3 p.m on Thursday. Rode up to Medicine Bow, Wy and stayed the night.
Here is 'Too Blue' ready to ride. She's saying ride me, ride me, yahoo cowboy.
This is an interior shot of the Owen Wiser suite at the Virginian Hotel in Medicine Bow. Medicine Bow is a town of about 250 people. It was at one time on the main e-w road across southern Wyoming. After they put I-80 in then the town pretty much folded up.
An exterior shot of the Virginian Hotel Medicine Bow, Wyoming.
Post office for Shogani, although this is a more modern version.
They had an American Legion hall.
And an abandoned Catholic Church.
Interior of the Alter from a dirty clear pane of a stained glass window.
Here's a picture of a cafe that does general repairs to your food. Was once a combination cafe-gas station-repair shop.
Funky neighbor hood van.
I think the guy fancied himself an artist of steel. Notice the steel plate with all the slugs cut from it. I used to do that in my youth in a machine shop in the ole home town.
This is an abandoned school in Medicine, Bow. Kind of sad, it must have once served at least 4-5 hundred students.
And for my father, who was at one time a Mason and a Shriner, a Masonic Temple.
The requisite picture of my dinner. Don't remember what it is called but it wasn't half bad but it also wasn't half good either. Soup was good, salad bar was small but fresh, mashed potatoes were the real deal but the gravy was from a package succotash was good. The main course was some kind of hamburger on the bottom of rolls. Barely any hamburger on the bottom. Beers were good though, 'Fat Tires' .
Cantaloupes were all over the place. Once I left Laramie and on up to Gillette I'll bet I saw several hundred head.
Too Blue in the morning sun. About 7 a.m. Stopped to take some pictures of the cantaloupes.
A herd of cantaloupes. They are like vermin in southern Wyoming and are abundantly represented by red greasy spots on the highway.
Got stopped by road construction. On this section of highway I'll bet I didn't see more than 4 cars/trucks coming the opposite direction in 85 miles.
Finally stopped for breakfast in Edgerton, Wy about 10 a.m. and remembered to take a picture half way through. My favorite breakfast: denver omelet, hash browns, sour dough toast and hot tea.
View of the outside of the cafe in Edgerton. If you are ever through stop in and eat. Nice people, pretty good food and low prices.
Biker dude and his chick at the rally. Didn't seemed pleased to have me taking his picture, ****off.
Great side hack set up.
My hovel. I arrived around 11 a.m. Friday morning registered and then set up camp. The night before I guess it was a massive downpour and wind storm people got drenched. Met a nice German man on a GS, while I was looking for a non-muddy place to pitch camp, who suggested I camp next to him, so I did.
I covet this bike big time. It is in immaculate condition. Just love the color scheme, or lack there of.
BMW factory rider doing stunts on an F800.
The factory rider.
Devils Tower, Wy. Quick Ethel take a picture.
Haven't I seen this picture somewhere else before?
Where's Waldo. Somewhere on this rock face is a climber. These columns are massive in width. Much larger than columnar basalt columns in the Columbia River Plateau.
On Saturday I took a day ride to Devil's Tower, Hulette, Sturgis, Deadwood, Lead, Newcastle and back to Gillette (about 300 miles). I was highly disappointed in Sturgis, nothing at all to distinguish it, don't see the attraction for a yearly rally here except for the Black Hills-beautiful. Rode on to Deadwood, was expecting some history here but there was nothing I saw except for casino after casino another disappointment. Lead on the other had was a beautiful little town, not yet changed much from the time it was a prosperous mining town. The Homestake mine closed for good in 2000 or 2002 and the mine owners (Barrick Gold Strike) gave the mine properties over to the state of South Dakota for a deep underground science laboratory. They are in the process of dewatering one of the deepest sections of the mine to begin work on the lab.
This is one of the open pits at Lead.
Too Blue's twin separated at birth.
Saturday evening after too many beers. Had everyone flip me the bird for Shogani's sake. They seemed pretty happy to do so. They are from lower left corner going clockwise; Mark, Anne, Siggi, Greg (barely visible), Judy, Pat, don't know, don't know, don't know and Mark.
On the ride home on Sunday back at the cafe in Edgerton this Harley chopper pulled in as I was leaving so I took its picture. For some reason it caught my eye.
And the road leads ever on.
This little house was at one time featured in Ripley's Believe It Or Not as being constructed entirely of dinosaur bones. It is just a mile away from one of the most famous turn of the century dinosaur digs. Two famous paleontologists got into a bitter dispute over who could find the most new species of dinosaurs. This is the Como Ridge dig area.
Getting ready to ride off into a nasty afternoon downpour.
All-in-all I had a pretty good time. Rode up by myself and home by myself but met friends up there. The event drew about 5500 riders which I understand is about 3000 less than normal. Met a lot of real friendly talkative people. Would I do it again, I'm not sure yet.
Leaving tomorrow for our clubs rally at Paonia, Colorado - 'The Top of the Rockies'. Maybe I'll see some of you there. _________________ Jethro Tull: Thick as a Brick!

WOW!!!
I slept in that same wayside near Devils Tower next to my bike one night.
Rolled over and this was the first thing I saw.
That was cool! Thank you for all the pics and that food looked real good.
That was sweet of you to get the Post Office pic as well *smooch* _________________ 1993 K1100RS aka The Shop Whore

Cool.
But we're going to worry if you start playing with your mashed potatoes making shapes like that... _________________ M N B

I looked for a "cat in a funny hat" at Gillette. No luck. Do like your choice of Fat Tire Ale. _________________ '93 K1100LT

Thanks for sharing your photos. I considered attending the rally, but the ride from Illinois is absolutely boring. Where is the national being held next year? When you were in the Sturgis area, did you ride any of the canyons near Spearfish? _________________ 2000 R1100RT

Thanks everyone for your comments.
Shoganai, you never cease to amaze me. That is a pretty rugged place to stop for a nap but the picture the next morning is sensational.
