One of these two oil filters is an OEM BMW oil filter and the other is not. Vote on which you believe is the BMW filter.
1. The darker one on the right is used so that it why it is dark. Otherwise it would be the same color as the one on the left.
2. The rubber piece on the top of the left one is there to make a seal against the plate that screws onto the engine. The one on the right does not have one.

I only got 10 votes in so far. I was hoping to get 25 or so before I revealed the answer but I'll see how many I get and if it is taking too long I wll let everyone know earlier.
When I do reveal or even now I would be interested to see what people are basing their decision on as long as they don't say something like "I have one sitting here in front of me" and give it away.

Well I feel like I am back in middle school where everyone is afraid to raise their hand and answer a question because if they get it wrong everyone will think the're stupid. All I have is 25 votes . With all the people on this forum you'lld think that I would have more and the poll doesn't even record your name.
Well I'll leave it up until I get home from work tomorrow and then I will reveal the the real BMW filter.

Rich - you would have got a lot more action on it if you had put it in the Dungeon... with some bikini clad (or naked) babe...
Although you didn't get many votes, you did get more than 200 views. _________________ Jim

How can you view this and not vote?
For a while I thought it was a test post. One you are supposed to ignore. Maybe others thought so too. Anyway, I voted right for no obvious reason. _________________ 93 K1100RS

Logic tells me it's the right filter.
Would you cut up a new BMW filter?

Well with the whopping 28 votes out of over 250 views here is the correct choice.
Wait for it
Wait for it
Wait for it
The one on the right is the BMW filter. The one on the left is a Fram 6063 which is made for the K bikes.
As you can see they are both all metal and the pressure relief valves look the same. I would say that the quality is about the same between the two but the price for the Fram is about half of what the BMW ends up costing me.
As you can see the Fram is a little shorter than the BMW but the Fram has 10 more pleats than the BMW. The Fram has 83 and the Bmw has 73(yes I counted them, twice) which from eyeballing it probably makes up for the difference in height for overall surface area.
As for me I have always used Fram oil filters in all my vehicles. All of them have made it over 100,000 miles and my current high mileage is a 1993 Mercury Villager van with 180,000 miles on it and it still runs great and is my work horse vehicle.
Yeah, I have read all the reports and I go by experience and the Fram has always worked for me.
So their you have it. A very unscientific study throwing out more information for everyone to digest.
Thank you for your indulgence,

well, that explains it. I haven't actually seen a BMW motobrick filter since I started using the BMW automotive filters. The BMW automotive filters have seven holes in the top - like the Fram - which is what I remember seeing. I didn't realize the motobrick filters only had six holes... _________________ Jim

The only way to tell how well an oil filter works is to have a qualified lab test the oil to see how much crud is in it when it's drained. I change my Mobil 1 synth on 10k intervals so I use Bosch filters or BMW ones from the stealer if I'm desparate. _________________ 93 LT (x2)

I replace with Mobile 1 every 5k. Considering if you change your oil in you car every 4k-5k and it runs at half the rpm I would think that you are breaking the oil down twice as fast.
Obviously it is all personal preference for when you do your changes.

Mobil 1 fully-synthetic is designed to run up to 20,000 miles between changes.
At 5,000 intervals, you are wasting your $
The brick engine was designed in 1981, when synthetic oils were unheard of.
They are quite happy on a good quality 10-40 mineral oil.
Apart from the 16v head change, that engine ran for 18 years without significant issue or recall.
Mobil 1 at 10,000 intervals is cool, but a mineral or semi-synth at 5,000 will do just as well.
I'm sure you love the old girl, but there are more cost effective ways to show her that you care _________________ C1 200 (2001)

The purpose of Mobil 1 and 10k intervals (at least for me) is not cost. It's doing half as many oil changes. And of course running a good synth won't hurt anything.
Once I get to 5k, I top off with either Mobil 1(at home) or Castrol 20-50(on the road) since there's only 5k left in the change interval. _________________ 93 LT (x2)

i will say this amsoil has been around alot longer than mobil1. Amsoil was developed after WWII but the availability makes it mass market appeal a low profile.limited selection product.
as for using 10/40w i would steer clear.. use a 15/40w mineral or the more engine friendly 5/30w for cooler months and 20/50w synthetics during the summer season.
i have swithed to full synthetics and can you tell you first hand that i have gotten better fuel mileage engine runs cooler and is quicker to cool off and can go much longer between oil intervals _________________ fix the problem not the blame ; fix what is messed up ; NO one is to blame. |
