|
|
I dragged this motorcycle related tangent up from the Dungeon in case anybody else wants to contribute:
| Roy S. wrote: | | When and where are you in CA? |
| drmalacarne wrote: | Roy.
That's the dates:
September
19-20-21: San Francisco
22: Cambria
23-24: Santa Mônica
25: Lone Pine
26-27: Yosemite Park
28-29: Reno
30: back to San Francisco
01: give up to GoldWing.
02: plane to São Paulo.
Any tips in how pilot a bike in the USA roads? What not to do?
Will be fine to meet you, Roy!

You asked, "Any tips in how pilot a bike in the USA roads? What not to do?"
Ride the bike and obey the traffic laws the same as a car does. Only in California is lane splitting or filtering permitted. Do not park the bike on the sidewalk. Do not think that, because the bike is small (relative to a car), you can park it outside of a marked car parking space (I'm talking about a city street marked for parking, a parking lot or parking garage, etc.). DO NOT expect other drivers (cars, trucks, etc.) to respect your space. You are smaller than they are and they may not see you. You should have no real trouble as, I have heard, if you can drive in Rio, you can drive anywhere. I've never driven in Rio, but I have driven in Manila and if you can drive there, you can definitely drive anywhere! HAVE A GREAT TRIP!!! I only wish I were closer to your itinerary.
Ride Safe, |
| Flying Duck wrote: | I used to get away with parking on the sidewalk in The Mission District in San Francisco. But that's rather rare and most places you'll get cited.
Even though you won't be riding your own bike, do whatever you can to avoid parking behind cars in the US. A lot of bikes get backed into in the US.
I'm not sure what it's like where you are but some people in the US tend to be a little lazy about using their turn signals. Expect the unexpected.
Don't trust any car that pulls off to the right side of the road. Many times they are setting up for a U turn they will make without looking.
If you're going to lanesplit then read this: http://www.advrider.com/forums/showthread.php?t=268518
In general you're safe doing 8 or 9 over the speed limit. However do not speed in small towns and do not speed in school zones - both are known speed traps.
It's legal to ride motorcycles in all car pool lanes.
If there's been heavy rain recently there tends to be more gravel on Hwy 1.
I'm sure someone will disagree with me but IMO people in SF are much better drivers(more skilled, more courteous and attentive) than people in LA.
Do lots of wheelies on the freeway. |
| drmalacarne wrote: | Phil and Duck.
Thanks a lot for all the tips!
For sure was all fine suggestions!
I'll very carefull in obay the speed limit, stop signs and turn signals actuations.
In doing lanesplits, the GoldWing has a width that limits the lanesplits, and the whellies.....I'm not sure if I could do that!!
Will be great to know any of you K11OG friends during my motorcycle trip.
And thaks again!

Here in Brazil the USA Lawmen have a classic fame for extreme severity and rigid law followers!

the worst thing about navigating california roads is all the foreign tourists clogging up the roads in rental cars and rental motobikes...

In the twisties, stay away from the center line. Cars are extremely sloppy here and cross way over the line all the time.
On single lane back roads, hug the far right. I can guarantee any oncoming vehile will not be, but will be barrelling right down the center as if they owned the road and no one else should EVER be travelling the road in the other direction.
Yeah, California car drivers are stupid.
I'll be headed through Yosemite to Benton and Bridgeport on the 27th. If you see black and silver K1100LT, that's probably me.
I live in San Jose (an hour south of SF). If you want to know some great roads in the areas you're riding, drop me a PM. _________________ M N B

Hook up with him if you can - he took me on some interesting backroads when I came through the Bay Area. _________________ 93 LT (x2)

Here me and Adriana were "destroying" 16lbs of "presunto crudo".
Thin slices of "Ramon" with a old red wine....

Wife and I are disappointed you and your wife are not visiting the East coast Gui.
Can't blame you though, if I was visiting I would hit the west coast also.
Make sure you take lots of pictures! _________________ Bane of your existence since July 2006

Jo.
I went to the California Map again, and studied the Tulare - sequioa park and kings canyon.
That's a very, very interesting idea!
I must leave Death Valley behind, but for the pictures that I saw of Seqoia Park the change will be for the best!
Adriana loved the idea.

doc...
when i saw lone pine i thought you were just gonna take us 395 up the east side of the sierras to yosemite... i didnt realize you were going to death valley...
it was officially 113 degrees in death valley yesterday... combine the air temperature with everything else the actual temperature with no shade on asphalt on a motobike was 130 plus degrees...
if you go to death valley in september you must be prepared... mentally... physically... and with proper equipment... or you will die...
read this... they just did death valley... and had a chase vehicle with ice... food... shade... water...

doc...
it was not my intention to save your life... just andriana...
santa monica to yosemite...
this is what i would do...
ca 1 to ca 33 in ventura...
ca 33 north to ca 41 near kettleman city...
ca 41 north all the way to yosemite...
its 350 miles... some of the 33 and the 41 is all flatland thru the central valley...
to take a day thru sequoia and kings canyon you would do this...
ca 1 to ca 33 in ventura...
ca 33 north to ca 41 near kettleman city...
ca 41 north to ca 198 near lemoore...
ca 198 east to sequoia and kings canyon...
the ca 180 west from sequoia and kings canyon to ca 41 in fresno...
ca 41 north all the way to yosemite...
its 300 miles to 3 rivers... you could spend the night there... then its 220 miles to yosemite if you take ca 180 all the way to the roads end in kings canyon...
what you would be skipping is a night in lone pine and a ride up us 395 on the desert side of the sierras...
we would ride out to 3 rivers from tulare to buy you a beer at the riverside grill thursday evening sep 25th...
think about it.. there are several nice little places to stay in 3 rivers...

Perfect to me, Jo!
I'll arrive at 3 rivers in the evening of 25, sept.
And next day, would be nice to have your company to ride to Yosemite!!!
I'll stay in 3 rivers and next day maybe in Arnold, in the Hwy 4, near Calaveras Big Trees Park. Do you recommend the Hwy 4, or there's a best way to Sparks?
I'm going to Sparks to visit a great friend, who has the same insanity as mine: 1932 Fords....
And that beer.... I don't forget....
