hello people. i have been reading this board for a long time and have even made a few contributions as a guest over the years. now i am a registered member. so, hello.

my oil/coolant pump is leaking oil. not an unusual thing after 50k. i am considering fitting a new pump rather than re-sealing the original. i know it is an expensive option but i do have previous experience of the problem [with a leaky k75]. the mechanics i have spoken to are chary about fitting new seals, and i am not in a situation to do the job myself as i would have to do the work out in the street. so, as i say, i am considering fitting a new pump, which costs £200. [mind you, the seals and things are not that cheap an option, especially when the outcome is not guaranteed.]

as i understand it, fitting a new pump is simply a bolt on job - am i right? so what i do is drop the oil and coolant, disconnect the hose and sensor wires, take off the front panel, undo the long bolts which fix the pump assembly to the bike, remove it, clean up the surfaces, smear sealant and fit the new pump. then new oil and coolant.

has anyone done it? is it that straightforward?

Dont drain the oil. After you have been driving and every thing is checked to be ok,you can change the oil.The oil level in the pan is below the pump,
so it is not runing out when you remove the pump.

Hi,
My suggestion, if you do fit a new pump, is to have new seals fitted to the old pump (and other things as necessary, up to a limit of, say, £100) by a competent mechanic and then keep the rebuilt pump as a spare.

Because they are lazy, and make a good profit on supplying you a new pump.
The seal kit is less than £25, and the repair is described in detail on page 11.29 of the official BMW Repair Manual.

With the front lower fairing removed, it is a 10 minute job to drop and replace the pump.

Have a go yourself - it is easy. Give Motorworks a call for the service kit.
Repair the seals, and enjoy the £150+ which you have trousered Wink
