While i was finishing getting the 85 K100RS in running condition, I decided that, given what I paid for and it's color, an apprpropriate name for this bike would be The Blue Plate Special.
I saved this part as the VERY LAST one to install - the BMW K bike spark plug cover - I thought it was fitting. It was the first part I removed to put some new plugs in and the last to go back on:
At about 4:00, I 'd finally finshed up work on the 1985 FYK (Finest Year K) K100RS and was ready to go for a test ride. Given that it's an old bike that hadn't been run in years, has old tires, and I'd just done a bunch of stuff to it, I donned my ATGATTiest gear, put some Reggae on the MP3 earbuds and headed out.
As you can tell from this preride picture when it was finished, I'm one of those people who keeps things very organized when working on vehicles.
I spend more time looking for tools than using them.
Since this was a test ride I'd planned on taking it easy. The old 2 valve brakes are mushy compared ot our K1100s. After about 6 or 7 blocks of testing the brakes and taking it easy, the notion of a mellow test ride totally flew right out of the window. I don't know if it was just the 85s and I dont usually swear in public but DAYUM that thing is just a fucking HOOT to ride. My initial impression is that it's like a K1100RS that's been on a very stict diet.
It's a bone stock bike. No Powerlet socket, no hazards, no heated grips, not even a licanse plate frame. And a stock seat to boot. The only "mod" this bike has is the four round reflector bolts holding the license plate on.
Anyhow, I had a frickin' awesome test ride and was grinning ear to ear the whole time. How fun. The only surpise was that on one turn it seemed to not only fall into the turn but FALL OVER into the turn.
Also, as I neared the gas station and was slowing to pull a left, a guy on a new K going the other way noticed me and slowed down to check out my antique -I thought that was pretty cool.
Here's The Blue Plate Special on it's first test ride:
I'll admit it's got lots of minor cosmetic issues up close but it's still a heck of a bike for what I paid for it - and just further reinforces my love for classic Ks.
OK, maybe it's not TOTALLY bone stock - some miscreant swapped in a nice amber LED for the front parking light.
Conclusion: PARTS BIKE, MY ASS, I don't think I'll have the heart to sell it. Maybe keep it for a city bike. And in a little over a year I can get cheap antique vehicle plates for it.
I'm a happy camper. I'm gonna go have some Crown Royal.

I've never ridden an '85, but I do agree K100's are a blast to ride!
Nice job, Drake |

I know what you mean about "looking for tools"

Make sure of your state regulations about "antique" plates. Here in Iowa, yes you can get those plates cheap, BUT, you can't drive on the street regularly with them. They are restricted to "special events". Parades basically.

I have that problem also, I always thought it was age, maybe its some strange effect of K bike ownership.
(getting a rolling tool tray helps, you just have to remember to put the tools on the tray.)

I always clean up the garage before working on the bike the next time or when i get fed up running over spanners when putting the bike away.

Heh, I love my '85, too. Since the summer of '94 I've loved it.

Did some CPR on a left-for-dead bike and came out with a winner!
Good show Drake, good show.
I like the lines of the older Ks, but know that they lack the ponies to haul my fat ass around sufficiently.
But those wheels gotta go. _________________ Bane of your existence since July 2006

Hey OTG you need to get yourself on a 1985 K100RS. There is no lack of power there. The 1986 and up lacked power but the 1985 runs like a raped ape. I know my K1200rs was faster on the top end but I swear my sons 85 K100RS was as fast off the line if not faster.
If you want to take a ride I am sure my son wont mind and you know where I live.

I love the name!
I'm very glad you didn't make it a parts bike. _________________ 1993 K1100RS aka The Shop Whore
