Wish I could ride that confident. I'll ride in the rain, however wet roads with curves scare the hell out of me. I can border on too careful.

I really should ride more in the rain. It usually takes me an hour or so to get used to it again. The other day coming down the coast in a light rain I found myself brainfarting and my technigue "locking up" even though I know damn well that the tires have another 20mph or more of traction left in the turns.

Wow! That's not riding, it's waterskiing! Talk about finese and absolutely being in tune with your bike, incredible.

I came up a bit hot on a sharp right hand corner, in the shade, the other morning that was soaking wet from a large puddle on the inside that cars had clipped and made the whole corner wet, the rest of the road had been dry up until then. It was all I could do to NOT slam on the brakes and trust my tires to go through it. That guy would have laughed at it and power slid right through it.

Was he qualifying and had to ride in those conditions?

He does have a few advantages over us in this situation.

1) Nice predictable clean smooth track.

2) Racing tires made for rain.

3) NINJA RIDING SKILZ!

To answer your title question, Kiyonari has huge bals with velcro,
that is where the traction comes from. The magic in this video is that
Kiyonari maintained lap times really close to the dry practice times,
despite all the sideways stuff. Alas, later in that race he fell
off...

Seriously, "full rain" racing tires recover from slides in the wet
very much like riding a dirtbike with knobbies on loose soil. You can
"hang the back out" pretty easily, and recover with small adjustments
of throttle. Racing rain tires BETTER stick like magic, they cost $400
a set and wear out in five to ten laps. (For the abacus and slide rull
crowd, that is $20 to $40 per MILE for tires...) If the track gets
dry, the tires shed ALL the rubber in one lap. I had a wet-to-dry race
where the tires totally melted in the last lap, so there were
five-inch rubber boogers hanging off the tire edges. It looked cool as
hell. I'd like to roll up to the local biker bar on Two Wheel Tuesday
with those tires and just stroll away from the bike...

British racers get lots of opportunity to practice wet racing. In the
USA many race organizations suspend racing when the track begins to
pool up. WERA races until the scoring tower is seven fathoms
underwater. It is kind of a matter of pride among WERA racers that we
race in full-on rain, hurricanes, etc., while the AMA wussies park if
there is a heavy dew.

The video reminds me of the MotoGP races in Indianapolis this year. Rossi and Hayden battled it out in rain and strong wind, reaching speeds up to 180 mph in the straights. It was quite impressive.
