Can anyone share their experience on replacing the oil sight glass on the 1100LT?
I found a couple of pages on www.ibmwr.org which tell of two ways of doing it. Both appear to be effective.
I'm guessing the steel circlip looking clip surrounding the outside edge of the rubber is purely there for packaging purposes and not to be used in the installation phase. Yes/No?
Have a Merry Christmas guys, _________________ Regards,

Yes on packaging, it is not used on installation. _________________ Bane of your existence since July 2006

I replaced one on my K100 several years ago because it turned dark. Replace it with the bike on the side stand or with the oil removed. I just used a small screwdriver and hammer like I would remove a seal. It came out easily. Clean the engine surface. I may have used RTV on the new sight glass. Tap the new sight glass in with a socket and small hammer. It went in easily.
I addition to getting dark, I have heard of others falling out on trips, losing all the oil. My 97 LT has 80+k and should be replaced. Its cheap preventive maintainance. |

I have the replacement sight glass, although I wouldn't say cheap.
I have just clicked over 200K and it started turning dark over the last 10k or so. Now it be totally black and I'm only waiting for the right time to change it over, considering the oil was replaced 1k ago.
Thanks for your feedback guys. _________________ Regards,

Know that you can put the bike on the sidestand and swap it out that way. _________________ Bane of your existence since July 2006

Simple method that stops any hammering on the alloy sump etc is to drain the oil and remove the filter (You would be doing this for a normal service anyway).
Now you can see the oil window through the sump and hit it with a drift to pop it out. The new one can then be pressed in using a similar sized socket as a drift to protect it.
Done a couple like this and they all went very easy, also seen the hammer the crap method from the outside, one caused a leak from the window due to scoring the aperture. _________________ AndrewD
