|
|
Where is the front brake light switch on a '94 K1100RS??
I am finally at the point where I am powering up the bike! I bled the brakes last night, and plugged in the rear brake light. The rear brake activates the brake light, but not the front, so the bulb monitor will not go out. I start looking for a brake light switch on the front brake, and there is none? I do not see any mounting holes for one either? Is there a mechanical switch that mounts to the lever? I see no signs of wear marks where a switch might have been....or does this fancy ABS II have a different way to tell the front brake has been activated?
Thanks for any advice!

It's a small micro switch with a silver lever. It is inside the master cylinder housing. You should be able to see a small wire under the brake housing at th elever pivot. There is a removable cover over the brake lever itself. I think just one screw. It is activated by the lever itself. There is a notch at the base of the lever near the pivot point.
At least on the LT. I suspect the RS is very similar. _________________ Rod Kilduff

Joe here's the wire coming out.
Here's the switch behind the cover on the bottom. Very tiny screws(2) to attatch the switch to the mc assy up from below.
I have the lever pulled so you can see the silver tab that opens the micro switch.

Hi, Joe,
You won't like this, but the part number and price (from the Max fiche) are 61 31 1 459 870 and $36.35. Good Luck!

I picked up a good, but used, condition spare on eBay for about $15, but they're not that common. I'd recommend a light dousing with WD-40, then work the lever quite a bit (or just activate the switch manually by moving the small flap activator itself). That got my old flaky switch working like a champ again.
WD-40, it's not just for chain lube anymore! _________________ M N B

Had a bad front brake switch problem myself last year. Bit the bullet and had Max send me a new one. Fixed. _________________ John & Cathy

Yep same part# and price is close, I paid $35 in Aug '08.
Here's a pic of the whole harness. I took this one out last year.

Cover? I aint got no stinking cover! Whatchu talkin' bout Willis?
WTF, I don't have the plastic cover on my front brake (#16)!
You would think when the dealer re-built my M/C four years ago, they would have said, "hey, your missing the $7 cover and that's why it's getting all gunked up! ARRGGHH!!!! I'm hating my dealer more every day!!!
I just rebuilt my M/C and all is well with a tight new rubber boot, but I had NO idea there was a plastic cover that I was missing!! What else is my bike missing??
I've ordered a new one from MAX and the screw that connects it. I also ordered cover #3 and it's screw #4 'cause I'm sure I don't have those either! (Wherever they go?)
I guess I should be happy I have a front brake at all!
(sorry for the hi-jack)

Steve, I suppose that's some of those parts left off for weight reduction of the RS to help make it more nimble and sporty. _________________ Ride safe.

That must be it, I hope it doesn't weigh my bike down, then it would be like an LT! _________________ Steve

Dear Scott,
Thanks for the close up photos. I saw the small notch on the cover....I actually thought it was a weep hole for the leaking brake fluid. As it was a mess in there when I took the cover off.

Continuing the hi-jack, I just got my plastic covers and screws from Max BMW (and my M&M's!).
The location of cover #16 was pretty obvious, but what about cover #3? I can't figure out where that goes. I looked and looked and couldn't find any unused screw holes for it.
Any guidance would be appreciated.

That drawing is confusing as it shows the handle upside down and I think backwards to the cylinder. I had this apart a few days ago and I'll take a picture if nobody gets back to you sooner. _________________ Jim

Just a simple pointer, like, left side on the bottom, or top side on the back and I think I could figure it out.
Thanks. _________________ Steve

I think you can't find it because there's already a screw holding the cover you already have. It's the one holding the throttle cable in place. Send it and half the m&ms back. _________________ Jim

Hey. hey...! What's this? Ransom for advice?
I was thinking maybe I already had this cover, but when I saw it on the parts ficshe and needed the other cover, I thought, what the heck, it's only a few bucks, might as well get it also.
But I still don't see it. I just gave a casual look, not a thorough going over. Maybe I already have it in place! _________________ Steve
