I'm looking into how to keep my phone/gps charged while I'm rolling. Has anyone found a good solution for getting a USB charger going?
To be honest, ideally there would be a regular USB end on it, as you could then plug it into a USB hub in, say, the tankbag, and plug everything else you want to charge into it.... _________________ 1993 K1100RS

I electrified my tank bag and use a cig lighter socket to charge my cell phone. I electrified my Multivario for that. Next I'm going to electrify the Bagster tank bag and with a small inverter I'll be able to charge my laptop which fits in the Bagster.
There's lots of cigarette lighter USB gadgets on fleabay. _________________ 93 LT (x2)

Have one in my VW and in my tankbag. Charges my phone and iPod. The USB adapter came with "mini-USB" and iPod charging cords. Probably cost about $15.
My own version was to make up an adapter that had a two prong plug at one end (the mate to the battery charger cord permanently connected to the battery) and a female cigarette lighter socket at the other end. Probably not a fancy as FD's since I just have the wire enter the tankbag at the back where the zippers meet. Inside the tankbag I have the USB converter plugged into the cig lighter outlet. Works for me.
Good luck,

NICE. Just bought a new tank bag and that mod might be in the future. Thanks. _________________ John & Cathy

I have a BMW plug in the handlebar socket running to a ciggy socket in the RHS glovebox. In that is a USB charger which charges the GPS rx & runs the Ipaq PDA. Now I have an HTC P3600 (Trinity) & SWMBO has an HTC P3700 (Touch Diamond) one common USB lead will charge both.
In the topbox behind the mirror, there is a voltage sensing relay, which only makes when above 13.4 volts to float charge a 7Ah dryfit and feed a second ciggy socket. So when the bike is parked, with the key in lock position, there is 12v to charge phones, camera batteries. When camping, this battery is used to run the tent, so if I fall asleep with the light or LCD telly on, a common occurrence, the bike will start next morning.
Only slight problem I have found, is that the SMPS in the charger wipes out weak FM radio stations when charging hard. Even after fitting ferrite barrels on the supply & output cables. Hope I don't have to explain this to the non techies _________________ Regards Tim,

Is that "SAE Adapter" the same plug used by the battery tender?
That would rock.
Ah, but this won't work for me in the long run anyway, as I'll be needing to charge my phone on a mount in the cockpit, since it's my gps. Even in the map pocket on the multivario, with the garage door opener propping it up, I have to take my eyes off the road for too long.
While reattaching the #$%@%$# mirror again the other day I found a plug that the previous owner must have installed. I was hoping to just adapt that to mini-usb, but it may just be easier to rewire from the battery. Not like it'd too difficult... but I'm trying to find something that doesn't require a cigarette lighter socket in there somewhere.
I've found these, but they're expensive:

I may end up just picking up a cigarette lighter charger, then cannibalizing it. _________________ 1993 K1100RS

Just kidding Tim.. I don't understand a word of that but won't ask you to explain! Maybe we can meet up sometime and you can show me! Much easier! _________________ Cheers, Steve H _______________________________________

A bit late to the party here, but what I did was lop the end off the "barrel" shaped plastic bit on my satnav charger - don't lose any of the circuitry in that compartment - and connected the wires to a proprietary (Hella) connector that fit in my socket - you know, the one by your left leg. Then I simply fed the wire up the side of the fuel tank, and hey presto. _________________ 1992 K1100RS - Red and gold. |
