Hi All - From research here on the site, I think I diagnosed my recent problem on my '96 RS as a sloppy grub screw. I do not think I have the chops or tools or time to attempt this repair. Does anyone here know what I can expect from a good shop as far as cost for this repair? I've owned the bike for just under a year and have put just about 10,000 miles on since last Sept bringing the mileage up to 45k.
Can a 4 inch play on the shift lever that I first noticed three days ago and seemed to get worse on the way home today be anything else?
Can I take the chance to ride it to the shop (about 10 miles in stop and go Seattle traffic) or do I risk this piece coming completely loose and eating the tranny?
Should I have any other work/maintenance done while this part of the bike is disassembled and exposed?
I had just saved enough to redo the fork seals and put new sneakers on for the winter commute and now I'm afeared to ride it like this.
Thanks in advance for any help and advice. |

JMHO but if I were having trans issues, I'd just replace the trans with a known good one. You can probably find one on Fleabay for a decent price.
Where are you on the Kitsap Peninsula? Just curious.
I've never had trans issues but from what I've heard from others it probably won't strand you.
Where do you plan to take your bike in Seattle? Ride West has some pretty high labor rates and will charge you standard hours while Mick Vallantine on Aurora has more reasonable rates and would charge you actual hours.

There's some dude in Tacoma who advertises $45/hour on CL and claims to know Beemers so that might be worth looking into if you don't have the tools/time to do a trans swap yourself. _________________ 93 LT (x2)

Thanks! I was going to call Vallentine's today. They've done work on this bike for the previous owner. I'm on Bainbridge and thought I could take the ferry over and ride up there. I figured I'd see if he could do the fork seals and put on new rubber while it's off the road and get it all done in one shot.
I'll try and take a look online for a tranny tonite. Not sure I could do that swap either, but Burt in Suquamish should be able to that, I would think. I'll look into the craig's guy tonite, as well. Thanks for the input. _________________ '96 K1100RS |

I'd put Bridgestone BT-023's on it. I recently put a set on my LT (that has an RS rear wheel) and think they're great tires.
My RS has PR2s on it now but I plan to put BT-023s on it the next time it needs new shoes. _________________ 93 LT (x2)

If your taking the trans. off, may as well do a full spline lube, check/replace the trans. input "o-ring" that can leak, check clutch plate thickness, etc. Trans. seals will be opened/exposed to get to that screw...they may need replaced. Clean/take apart starter brushs' residue, anything else that will be exposed and needs maintenance? Probably the airbox re-circulate rubber hose, check intake rubber for leaks, etc. Fun fun! ...or just expensive.
The good news is there are super tutorials and great help on this site and on the Flying Duck mans site!!
....another tidbit! Check the exhaust for cracks at the welds, if you find one (most k1100's do) have it welded BEFORE removal...or tack weld, then removal for repair. You do not want to weld it together off the bike, it will not fit back on, the header pipes will move...dont ask how i know. _________________ 1997 K1100LT-SE

They turned the bike around in a day and replaced both fork seals and bushings while it was in for the grub screw. Bike runs/shifts great. It really seems to like this cool weather, too...running like a champ! Time to get the wet weather gear out for a few months now.
Does anyone have experience with both the Metzler Z8's and the BT-023's to compare. The PsyKotic Waterfowl likes the BattleAxes. It would be tough for me to change from the Z8's as I'm pushing 15 months and 13k miles on this set, but the 023's are a bit cheaper online and if they're as good, might be a good swap.
Cheers! _________________ '96 K1100RS |

My experience with the Battle axe is very short lived life, Was very disappointed that the front tire wear life is almost as short as the rear tire, I went to the Michelin Pr2's and have been very happy, Only down side I personally can say is the rear is a little noisy, but great straight and leaning grip. _________________ 1993 K1100LT
