|
|
This is carried over from the posting on the Tech header.
Due to our ineficiency [ dispatch guy still in village stocks! ] the wrong shock was initially shipped out to AndyC.
It's for a stock length K75 / 100 or will lower a K1100 by 1" [c].
It's set up for normal weight range [ rider / pass ] and touring / brisk riding style. BRAND new never fitted and complete with Black spring, C Spanner and full fitting kit.
AndyC has kindly agreed to post out from his location [ Nr. Vegas ] which means -you will NOT pay US customs AND you willONLY pay internal US postage.
That's a bargain folks at £200 and you can pay via Paypal.
It's almost worth going out and buying a K100 to put it on at that price!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Contact RAM direct at - info@realmengineering.com. or PM me.
Oh yes, AndyC had the CORRECT shock shipped out immediately the error was discovered and is now one happy biker.

Any estimate as to how much that is US shipped to NH?
/edit: Sorry about the spelling error, Sug. It went all morning before I caught it. _________________ Jim

Jim - is your bike already lowered? That shock will lower your bike an inch - that will change how the bike handles. _________________ Jim

It's stock as far as I know. I'm thinking an inch lower might not be a bad thing. I'm 6'0". I think unless it's awfully inexpensive I should probably have brake line replacement ahead of shock on my to do list. Tax bill came this week. _________________ Jim

Jim - not a sales pitch - honest!!!!!
As you know I've put a 1" lower shock on both my K100RS and K11RS.
Main reason is that I am short on the inside leg measurement and it was a tippy toe job every time I stopped.
One day at Stratford on Avon, with thousands of tourists around, I stopped on a very cambered road and put my right foot down where the pavement SHOULD have been. Due to the camber I was about 3" from a safe touchdown and there then followed the comical [ later ] image of me doing a Monty Python-esque slow motion fall to the right!
My riding buddy saw what was happening and pulled up on my inside to stop the complete fall!
The next day I installed the 1" shorter shock.
HOWEVER, that's only part of the story - that was my K100RS. I diligently moved the forks up in the trees until the geometrical satus quo had been achieved.
When I modded my 11 - I was so anxious to get out on it, I did so BEFORE adjusting the fork height - REVELATION - the bike turns in without having to fight or muscle it, and feels like a different bike - in a good way. I DID subsequently re-adjust the fork height, but after a brief ride put them back to how they were.

I evaluated my bike at it's current height and decided that it is fine where it is. It could be an inch higher and I could still flatfoot easily, though getting on and off I'd have to use the sidestand. As far as handling, I guess without a side by side comparison, I won't know.
All that being said, can anyone tell me how much this thing costs in real money??? _________________ Jim

Hi, Jim,
If you were in UK as the seller is, GBP200 is "real money". With the dollar dropping like a stone, GBP1 is worth around $1.65 as I write this. So GBP200 is about $330. Compared to a stock shock, it is a steal! Of course, you should have the bike for which the shock was made. _________________ Ride Safe,

Jim,
As Phil notes it needs to be the correct shock for the bike AND you.
But yesterday on the BMWMOA website "fleamarket" there was an Ohlins shock (new? used?) for sale for $970 !!!! Is it worth that??
So the RAM (NEW!!!) is a deal.
Just FYI.

Sorry guys - the shock has now been bought by a club member.
Thanx everyone for the interest.
The GOOD news is that Realm have been able to bring the carriage costs to the USA down by 20% - and they continue to push the carriers for a better deal.
The RAM shock is now beginning to take off in Australia and in Europe.

I had decided to pass anyway. I will buy the stock size when I do buy. But just out of curiosity, Doesn't a shorter shock play hell with the geometry of the centerstand? Just replacing my rear tyre made a huge difference in mine. _________________ Jim

Jim,
rather than repeat myself, see 4 or 5 posts earlier where I have related my own exoeriences with lowered shock [ 30mm lower ] on my k11RS and K100RS.
IF I were concerned about the "stock" geometry I would have simply raised the fork legs in the triple tree. Soggy front springs are just as likely to affect "geometry", but when was the last time anyone adjusted the fork height to compensate?
Absolutely NO problem with centre stand [ or side stand ].
You will see a greater differential with a 100lbs solo rider and the same bike with a 200 lbs rider and 150 lbs passenger - a bike is designed to work within a variety of datums. Add a further 100lbs of luggage in your panniers?????????

And it doesn't matter anyhow as I'm the one who bought it and plan to put it on a K75. _________________ 93 LT (x2)

Duck, I'll be curious to read your opinions about it. I've been very pleased with mine so far. I've had to get used to the idea of a shock actually absorbing the bumps (compared to my stock shock which I had cranked all the way up to compensate for it's wear) and feeling a bit soft, but then being responsive in the twisties and on hard bumps.
I think I've found the happy middle ground with the pre-load at about an inch and the damping at about 7 clicks. Soft on the gentle bumps and firm on the hard bumps and twisities. _________________ Steve

Duck,
OK you've raised your head above the parapet - didn't want to finger you previously in case of insane jealousy by others!
Only 2 have gone to K75 owners, and apart from the now obligatory - "aren't they wonderful" no REAL feedback as to settings to suit the bike - would be interested to hear your views.

TJ- Haven't given any feedback because I am still "fiddling" with settings. I tend to have constantly variable loading (weight):
unloaded 1-up
moderately loaded 1-up
unloaded 2-up
everything but the kitchen sink loaded 2-up
The hardest part of giving feedback is that at nearly the same time I:
-did new seals on the front and restored the proper oil level
-put on the new RAM shock
-changed from Z6 tires to Michelin PR2
-did the handlebar mount stiffening mod
The bike feels VERY different now compared to a few early season rides before I did the above changes. It changes direction better, holds a line through corners better and doesn't move around as much in crosswinds.
The one thing I can directly attribute to the shock is the way is controls the rear end height- doing a great job of leveling the bike plus absorbing the road jolts in the 2-up and LOADED mode. The old shock would nearly bottom out and really feel bad under those conditions.
On the last ride where we were heavily loaded I had the damping turned up to 10 clicks and the spring around 40mm. The ride felt level and compliant even though we were over 1000# total
Just a "click" will greatly decrease any po-go-ing.
Keep reminding those of us with the new Ram and we will provide input- that is if we find time between rides.
