A friend has a 1985 K100. It will not run. He has traced the problem to fuel pump. There is only 1.5 volts at the fuel pump. He is unable to identify which is the fuel pump relay. Where is it & how do you identify it please ? Has anyone any ideas which may assist ? All contributions greatly appreciated !!!!
Thanks.
Chris

Thanks for that Flying Duck.
What we really want to know is, will it be the pump relay failure which is resulting in 1.5 v at the pump, or could it be something else & if so, what ?
Is there a test that can be done on the pump relay, to eliminate it ?
Any assistance/guidance, greatly appreciated.

Hello!
You can replace pump relay with other next to it - they are the same. Also carefully check the condition of power connector at right front area of underside of fuel tank - it is crucial.

Best regards

If you're getting that low of a voltage I wouldn't think it's a relay as usually a relay works or it doesn't.

There's two places in the circuit that can fail:

1) Fuel tank connector. If that's the problem you can just rewire.

2) Connections as the base of the fuel level sender. The solution is to replace the fuel level sender.

Hi Duck,
Thanks again. Will pass on to my friend. So far hes got volts @ pump up to 10.5 which should be enough to run it but all that happens is a click. Suspect pump siezed ? I suspect, as u say, bad connection & corrosion.
I may be back Smile

If it just clicks then DON'T burn the pump out by applying voltage for any period of time.

Soak it in Chevron Techron Concentrate for a few days. I let a stuck one like that soak for a week. It was still stubborn after that but after about 15 seconds of 12.4V it unjammed and started working again.

I tried soaking it in PB Blaster before that but that didn't work.

I belive he said it was a 1985. If it is a 1985 then the connector is located on the front left side under the tank. At leas tthis is where it is on the early 1985s that I have.

There is another possible cause. A Scots member of the UK BMW club had this last year. Eventually traced to a crap installation of an immobiliser. Buzz out the continuity of the wire from pump relay to connector or use a 12V 21Watt lamp instead of a meter to make sure the feed is good enough to power the pump motor.

You could refers the polarity on the pump and see if it is willing to start up in the other direction. If it does that than refers the connection again and try.
