It looks like JO's schedule has firmed up for next summer and he and Ms. Bug will again be coming up to my cabin for the first weekend in August. That's usually a very good time of year in the Pacific Northwet so the timing is most excellent.
Everyone else is welcome to attend - the more the merrier.
The event will oficially start on August 1, 2009 or you can show up earlier if you like and it will last whatever duration we all agree to. My plan is to head up to the cabin a few days early so I can stockpile some crab for a big crabfest. I'll also round up some tender little oysters from the beach and dig up a bucket of nice little butter clams. That time of year the sockeye are still running up in AK and flown to Washington daily so we'll also be having some nice fresh salmon as well.
For breakfast, we can cook in or go to The Chimacum Cafe. It's about a 15 minute ride from the cabin and has a statewide reputation.
Here are some details:
The best way to describe the accommodations is "indoor camping."
Cost per night: $89/night for JO, everyone else (including Micki) is free.
Sleeping arrangements: We have numerous beds and cots so sleeping arrangments won't be an issue. You will however need to bring a sleeping bag although during August a blanket would probably suffice.
Running water: What, you think you're staying at frickin' Hyatt or something? We do not have running water. However, they recently piped the island for water so we do have a meter up by the road with a tap and lots of water containcers at the cabin.
Showering: Bring some quarters and your own towel. (I recommend the MSR Pack Towel. Lightweight, packs small and dries quickly.) There is a state park at the tip of the island that has OK showers - 0.50/3 minutes.
Facilities: We have an outhouse. But it's not just any old outhouse, it was desiged and built by our family friend who owns the adjacent lot. It's architecturally pretty fancy.
Electricity: Yup, we got it. It powers our nice large refirgerator for making ice and chilling beer. Sometimes there's even room for food.
Cooking: We have a standard 4 burner range in the cabin and a Weber propane BBQ for use on the deck.
It is not the fanciest place in the world but it sits on a bank above the water and is a nice peacceful rural setting. (Until I get drunk and start blasting tunes and blowing off fireworks at midnight. )
I've got a little 8 foot John boat with a 3.5hp outboard that I use for crabbing and sunset wine cruises.
If you're a GPS geek or want to take a look on Google Earth, the coordinates are 48.06540 N 122.70117 W.
Day rides:
As Johnny can tell you, the ride out to Neah Bay and back along the waters of the Strait of Juan De Fuca is an awesome ride and one of the best in the state.
Here's a sampling of it on YouTube:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CDfmND6Plfs
Either as a detour from the Neah Bay ride or for a shorter day ride, you can ride up to Hurricane Ridge where the Olympic Mountain range is laid out in front of you. There are deer(ugh),mountain goats and maybe a black bear ot two to ogle if we're lucky. (Black bears are harmless unless you're wearing a pork chop around your neck.)
Doing both Neah Bay and Hurricane Ridge makes for a long day with not too many stops. But it's certainly possible. Jim Davis and I did it one day and even had time to stop for a couple of beers.
If you're into architecture and old shipping towns that have been converted into tourist traps, charming Port Townsend in about a 25 mile ride. In the old days it was a center of shipping and all of the ships' captain build some very lovely Victorian homes there. There's some cool old stone and brick buildings there too.
Since it's my place, there's no need to make reservations or even a firm commitment to attend. If you're afraid of being near JO, I don't blame you. Drop me a PM and I'll find a way to uninvite him. Or maybe, like last weekend, I''ll ride to his hotel at night and take a belt sander to his Metxelers while he's sleeping.
Afterwards, for those heading east, I'll probably swap the RS for the LT and join you to Yellowstone, Glacier, The Tetons, Beartooth Pass and the Chief Joseph Scenic Highway or whichever way you want to go. I could do Sturgis too since my step-aunt lives in Custer, SD and I owe her a visit.
There's lots of great ways to get here too.
Mr. Dungee is waiting for you with a pancake on his head:

Bah you West Coasters have all the fun.
A West Coast trip isn't in the cards this coming year unfortunately.
Eat crab for me. (nice touch with the pancake too!)

Hello Mr Duck,
Thanks so much for offering to host this.
Unlike Johnny I'll be attending only if I'm unemployed and have time on my hands. Will know real soon if my employer is going to survive or not.... This is a rough downturn.
Happy Holidays to all!

Hey Duck, is there perhaps tent space by your cabin? If my navigator/cook decides to come along I don't think she is into mixed dormitory sleeping arrangements but we are used to tenting. Your invitation has all the earmarks of a rip roaring good time.

I don't think that will be a problem. I might also be able to get the key to our neighbors small cabin and you could prorbably use that. Worst case if you don't like where to put a tent at our property, there's Fort Flagler State Park a mile up the road at the top of the island. Lots of typical state park camping and showers there.
You can rent chaming little houses there as well:
http://www.parks.wa.gov/vacationhouses/ftflag.asp
Edit: If there are people who aren't into the group indoor camping and spiders at my cabin, you could probably pitch in together and share those places. _________________ 93 LT (x2)

Oh, I forgot to mention the driving range. I've got a 5 gallon bucket of balls. If you use a 9 or a wedge then the balls can be recovered at low tide. I have both righty and lefty clubs. _________________ 93 LT (x2)

But for the next year, 2009, maybe I couldn't left Brazil.
So, eat a "carangueijo" for me too!

I'm half way up Vancouver Island, but not that far due to the Coho. The Oylmpic Peninsula has great riding. I'll keep watching.

5 month bump? At least we hungry mothers are regular and current with our confusion!
I'd be there if I could, Google Earth says 3,096 miles one way, can't quite swing that this year.
Enjoy the crabs! _________________ Steve

In case you don't like raw oysters......
First you pick some perfect sized ones from the beach and shuck them:
Then you get them ready for the frying pan: (Start at the bottom of this picture.)
Then you fry them to until they're a nice golden brown:

Hi, J.O.,
I got laid off a week and a half ago. If I don't get called back, I'll have the time. I'm planning on meeting you face-to-face (along with Drake) at Hungry Dungee I. Don't throw stones as I ride up on a K75 instead of a K1100. LOOKING FORWARD to Hungry Mother II and Hungry Dungee I.

Just a heads up if you were planning on camping at the state park. Due to budget cuts, the state is thinking about closing down Fort Flagler Sate Park so there may not be camping there this summer. (Or public showers close by - but the Marina in Port Townsend has showers.)
There's a trailer park that's closer to the cabin so that might be an option for camping.
If the state closes the park I'll figure out what other camping is nearby.
This is not a done deal that the state is closing the park. It's under consideration so it hasn't happened yet and hopefully they'll get flooded with emails and take the park off of the hit list.
I will keep people posted as things evolve.
Here's an some more info if you're curious:
http://www.ptleader.com/main.asp?SectionID=5&SubSectionID=5&ArticleID=23767&TM=42700.73
Drop them an email to the Parks and Recreation Committee email address in the editorial if you're so inclined. Every email counts. _________________ 93 LT (x2)
