so here's the situation. i just recently (last week) had to replace the plate behind the right side mirror due to it getting bent in a spill (the week before). not proud of that one at all, but at least i learned a little about the internals of the bike. it slid on and then snapped into place. now it is solid as a rock.

tonight, as i'm putting it back in the garage, i notice that the left hand mirror has come off its bottom peg and won't stay on there. i'm wondering if anyone knows how to remove the mirror properly so i can then reseat it properly or at least find out why it isn't staying seated.

edit: well, oops, i forgot to hit submit. so anyways, between writing that above at 9:45 and now at 12:30 i have solved my problem. but probably in the most difficult manner possible. this was definitely not a good second wrenching job to do on the bike. on the positive side, it is done, and works just like new (as far as i can tell at least). on the negative side, i lost a 2 washers, a screw, can't get the signal cover's gasket back in place (probably just needs a new one as this one is really old) and found out that there were at least 3 other screws already missing from the bike. so, i'm headed to the hardware store tomorrow to find replacements. at least the bike is back together again. Smile

next up on my list -- determining the source of the vibrations.

okay. when you say plugs you mean spark plugs correct? in all honesty, are those pretty straight forward to replace?

and still on topic, anyone know how to properly remove the mirrors for future reference?

Yes:

Remove belly pan. 8 bolts around the rim, 2 down below on the bottom rear. I usually put a couple of blocks of wood or a cardboard box underneath to support it while removing it.

The engine is an in-line 4 on it's side, the spark plugs are on the left side.

The spark plug leads are sticky on the plugs. I usually use some small vice grips on the "tab" and give them a good yank. I usually just write the cylnder number on the spark plug leads to make life simple when putting them back on. If you forget, thay have sequential part numbers on their wires.

Your factory tool kit (if you got one with the bike) has a cylindrical tool with a nylon collar and two hex ends. The larger end is your spark plug wrench.

Spark plug choices:

Economy: Autolite 4163 or NGK DR7EA

BMW $$$: Bosch XR7LDC

What I and some others prefer ($32/set on FleaBay): NGK DR7EIX (but you have to get the little screw-on ends for them)

Gap: 0.024"

Be sure you have the spark plug leads pushed back on firmly.

Removal: Outer edge of mirror front to back.

Install: Bottom two clips, then top clip. Sometimes it helps to put a little WD-40 on the nipples of the metal plate.

If the clips on the mirrors are getting old, you can bend them back a little with pliers or replacements can be had new from BMW for about $1.50 each. Part # 46631455047

Even new lens gaskets are a PITA to install correctly.

One other thing: A lot of us buy steel fishing leaders and make "leashes" for the mirrors. That way if they get knocked off by somone brushing aginst the bike they just hang there instead of crashing to the ground.

thanks! i'll pick up a set here soon then. i'll need to check to make sure i have the plug tool, but i feel like i probably do as the kit has everything else. i read a couple write ups on the throttlebody sync and figured i would do that here soon. just gotta get the sync tool first.

yeah i tried to put the gaskets for the lens back in when it fell out and just ended up saying eff it. i think the gasket is as old as the bike and so probably time for a new one. i tried to take the mirror off in that manner but i was just deathly afraid of breaking it. so i figure the hassle i went through was worth not paying the $150+ for a new mirror. gotta have some scratch to pay for gas and a new paint job this winter! Wink

Hi, Supercat1,
Flying Duck has given you some good advice. Personally, I am happier using a ratchet, extension and plug wrench instead of the tool in the tool kit to change plugs. The plug wrench is an 18mm spark plug socket (deep socket with the plug insert), NOT a 5/8" or 13/16". If you use Champion plugs, I believe they use the 5/8" socket, but Bosch, NGK and Autolite (what I use) take the 18mm wrench. And remember, if you decide on NGK plugs, they do NOT come with the little cap for the top of the plug. Don't forget to get them from your auto parts store. They are molded (cast?) into the Bosch plug and they come with the Autolite plugs even though you might have to screw them on. Make sure they are tight.

phil,

thanks for the heads up on the tool(s) needed. i should consider getting a socket wrench set. i don't own one yet and it is definitely a very useful tool; i've just never really had the need for one before. guess i'll be hitting up home depot/sears after work. need a good screw driver (preferably ratchet, with extending arm that has a magnet on the end) and the socket wrench.

i got some of the techron concentrate during lunch along with new gaskets for the front lenses, put an order in for a new left lens, and a couple screws i needed. i'll get some new plugs in a little bit.

guess i don't really know what these "fishing leaders" are or how to use it to make a "leash" for the mirror. is the leader the thing you put the fish on after you caught them, or just thick fishing line?

and considering i wasn't able to push the mirror off on my own i don't feel like a simple bump will knock them off. but of course i was scared of breaking the bike and needing to buy at least $160 new mirror housing, while some random dude that hits my bike is not thinking about that ...

was that a good price for the plugs i got?

Leader is the line, thin braided steel line, and you hook it inside the mirror. Then thread it through and hook it somewhere inside the fairing so if the mirror comes off accidentally it won't hit the ground thus saving you $160.

Hi, Supercat1,
You're right; it's not too bad a price compared to a BMW dealer. But that's why I use the Autolites. I've never had a problem with them, neither on my K1100LT's nor my K75's, and they normally cost me a bit over $1 each. Autolite 4163, if you want the number.

Would be easier to do on your RS. LT's don't have the signals in the mirrors so holes would have to be made. Just follow the wiring. You really should pop a mirror off just for the sake of slapping her around a little. Very Happy

supercat - you can easily attach tethers to your RS mirrors - the LT mirrors are totally different.
