|

Hi guys
I've got pictures of my K75 to post, planning on doing that tonight. Hope you are all well.
I've finally got my 92 K75S back from the shop and am in the process of fixing the other issues. I'll post an update on my other thread shortly. My question today is regarding the clutch. I'm having a few problems:
- Shifting up from first to second, I would say 1/3rd of the time I get stuck in Neutral and have to really kick it.
- Shifting down from 3rd to 2nd when the bike is moving is a struggle. I hear gears hitting against each other and I have to bear the sound of it and really whack down or wait till the bike has fully slowed.
- Shifting down from 2nd to 1st when the bike is moving, does the same thing as above.
- Occasionally shifting up between 2nd and 3rd, I hit some sort of weird neutral ground, where my gear counter goes blank and its seem I'm halfway between the gears.
I'm quite a bit worried because its really quite a pain in the ars right now. I'm going to try adjusting the footlever and maybe tighten up the clutch cable a bit? What are some thoughts on what it could be? _________________ 1992 K75S

How about rotating the lever downward by 1 spline? _________________ John & Cathy

I suppose if you have thick boots/big feet that rotating up a notch might do something but it won't impact how the tranny shifts.
The one thing you don't want to do is FORCE it to shift as that can bend the fork inside. Brute force is your enemy, not a cure. _________________ 93 LT (x2)

Adjusted the clutch cable - no real change. Still a horrible grinding from second to first and inconsistently shifting from first to second.
Transmission fluid recently changed.
Any ideas? _________________ 1992 K75S

Find a replacement. It'll be cheaper than trying to fix it. _________________ 93 LT (x2)

Not really when you start looking at several hours of labor and BMW part$ vs. a few hundred for a used tranny.
When the splines stripped on my K75RT it was a no brainer. _________________ 93 LT (x2)

Alright, keep your eyes out for one - if you see one floating around whereever you find your parts, let me know. I'll either be buying one soon or I'll ride this till the spring and then replace before I do any touring. _________________ 1992 K75S

Yep thats the one, if it is getting stiff it will cause problems shifting gear.
When the last oil change was done what was the old oil like, clean? dirty?
Would be unusual to have problems with the amount of gears you do if its the box its self unless you have bent/damaged the selector shaft.

Dry splines usually cause sticky downshifting, not grinding gears. And the sticky downshifting usually manifests itself in higher gears. _________________ 93 LT (x2)

Maybe this'll help if your transmission isn't shot: http://www.k11og.org/tech/k11tech_shifting.shtml _________________ Jim

I don't know if the K11 uses the same parts but on the R11's the main probs with shifting can be bent selector forks. This is probably due to mis-shifts before which can bent/damage the forks and lead to premature wear.
When you change gear the fork may not be able to get the gear wheel far enough accross for a clean change. Selector fork wear on the R11's shows up in small alloy particles in the gearbox oil, more easily seem by shining a torch in the oil. The R11 forks are alloy base with a hardened coating. Once the coating wears then the alloy is exposed and this wears far quicker.
Obviously if you remove the box for a spline lube 1st but the oil change can give you some idea.
