Guys,
I'm back from 1 yr in Afghanistan!
Rode the 96 K1100LT and it sure felt good! Bike was used when bought - it now has 72K miles
Quick Questions:
1) I have no idea if the valves have ever been adjusted - has anyone just ignored this maintenance?
2) Is is necessary to grease the trans splines if the tranny shifts smooth?
3) How hard is it to grease the driveshaft.
I'm Mechanically OK.
Thanks,

Hi 6899
1) It's enough to remove valve cover to check valve clearance. Usually adjustment is not required. But if it is, then cam shafts have to be removed - IMHO average difficult level.
2) Can't help in that. By my self I think if I should do it.
3) I am just about to do. As far as I was able to get to manuals, one have to: remove the brake calliper, disconnect speed sensor (and live it on place, to avoid oil split), disconnect shock absorber, reaction lever, and disassembly pivot bearings. So check list is long.

+1,000!
1) http://www.ibmwr.org/ktech/k11valve.shtml
2) Do you know the last time it was done? BMW recommended service interval is 40k.
3) Not too bad. Takes 2-3 hours. _________________ 93 LT (x2)

Hi, Bagram Red,
THANK YOU for your service. Thank God you are back here, in one piece. To answer your questions:
1. Check the valve clearances. Then you will have a baseline. My valves ('96 K1100LT) needed adjustment when I checked them at 32k miles. The next time they were adjusted was at 84k miles. I helped the current owner check them at 146k and they still were in spec.
2. It is necessary to grease the splines if you have difficulty downshifting without blipping the throttle. I had the '96 done at 32k, when it was in for the valve adjustment. BMW, I've read, recommends it being done at 40k intervals. That said, the '96 was done at 32k. It's now at 146+k and the splines haven't been greased again.
3. If you mean grease the U-joint, I don't know; I never did it. If you mean the driveshaft splines at the gearbox end and the final drive end, I don't think it is a problem area. I wouldn't worry about it.
I hope this helps! _________________ Ride Safe,

Thanks for the answers. I guess I'm tempted to ride what is left of this year and then take off 1 week to do all the work.
I'm the 3rd owner so I will have to assume none of the maintenance was ever done (steering head bearings, trans and driveshaft splines, R & R the front wheel bearings, etc etc).
Damn - its a lot of preventive maintenance to do! But I'll do it.
For the record, I'm a civilian who volunteered to go over to Afghanistan for my agency - the DOD Inspector General. Being hard of hearing, never had to worry about being drafted during 'Nam but have worked for the US Army for over 25 years (Finance Officer, Chief of Acctgs, etc - AMC) Strongly feel everyone should serve their country. Got to know a lot of fine men and women in uniform over there.
Will not discuss politics about the war.
On the road with wife in a CAR in Va on the Blue Ridge Parkway. Visited Quantico where my son gradutated from TBS. He is a 2nd LT in USMC, Charlie Co.
Anyway hope to ride in earnest next year. Only about 1200 miles so far this year. Bummer.
