Been a long while since I posted here, but...

That's my LT on a French autoroute last weekend after it suddenly died and smoke started pouring out from behind the right-hand panel.
The fried wiring was cut back to bare copper wires. A Swiss Army kniofe was used to slice some plastic HazMat tape into strips. The tape was used to fashion new insulation. An hour or so after the breakdown, it was running again, and it did 400 miles to the destination and home.
The culprit was the wiring from the sidestand cutout, which runs behind the right-hand footrest plate and was pinched (I'd had ther plate off a year ago). It fretted through with the vibration, and shorted against the engine.
I've now just removed the switch wiring altogether. It was always a PITA. What surprises me, though, is that no fuse blew. |

This circuit goes unfused from the ignition switch to the gasoline pump relay, via the kill switch and sidestand switch.
You`re not the only one with this experience I`ll guess, since BMW change this wiring on the version with Motronic 2.2 from 7/93 on.
After that the sidestand switch breaks the ground circuit on the motronic and starter relay.

I had a similar issue with that wire, except mine would blow the fuse for the brake light every time I touched the rear brake. I dug in found the pinched wire, then routed it in a way that it will never happen again. Plus I put some shrink tubing on the wire, that will protect it better than just tape.

Then it must have been the wiring for brakelight switch, and not the sidestand switch.
But afterall routing for both wirings are similar, and it`s rather tight behind the footrestplate.
It`s seems like some extra attention to those wires whenever the footrestplate is disturbed are needed.

Good morning "Duke"...
Nice job on the roadside improv repairs !! Good that you had the tape with you, and as always, great to have a good 'ol Swiss Army knife. Thats the kind of diagnosis and repair that us very old Airhead riders (r100/7 ) have become familiar with. When my entire wire harness fried front to back, I elected to make my own, using my own routing, wire identification, and connectors.... plus I used 'aircraft quality' wire with double insulation. Despite that, I KNOW just how it feels to be on the side of the road, hundreds of miles from home, with a severe problem to confront. True, its all part of the motorcyclists life, but those first few minutes before a plan is mentally formulated can be very frustrating !
