Hi guys,

Wondering if anyone has any experience fixing the older style black bmw saddle bag locks that go along with the 90s K75s. I picked up a second hand set today (all three bags plus brackets) but the locks are such a pain the #$@ - its incredibly finicky getting them to unlock or lock. Spraying WD40 in the locks has done nothing. I'm having the same problem with my helmet lock which appears to be the same kind of lock as used on the bags.

Any tips? Anyone dabbled?

I think my locks are a little different but I got them operating smoother by blowing them out with compressed air and lubricating with silicone spray. I think this is a better choice than wd40.

Hello!

You can always buy lock fix set and renew and re-key all locks. Look at http://www.realoem.com/bmw/partgrp.do?model=0522&mospid=47927&hg=51&fg=15&lang=enUS and find right ETK number. You can order required parts at your local BMW dealer (even the one without motorcycles).
Check also: http://www.ibmwr.org/ktech.shtml look for re-keying - there are instructions how to take apart those bastards Wink.

Is it the keyed part of the lock (turning the key) that is bad or the cam action to open after it's unlocked?

The key part, I have to pull and push and pull and push and pull out slow until it finally allows me to turn. Takes ages.

Did you get more than one key with the second hand locks you purchased? If not, I wonder (and this is just a guess) if keys wear out? I'm thinking if the key is worn, thus smaller, the tab things (I don't know what they are actually called) may not retract fully in to the tumbler, which may cause the difficulty you are describing. I purchased a new seat/helmet lock a while back due to the piece that locks the seat down breaking. I brought the new and old mechanism to a locksmith who was able to quickly switch out the tumblers, allowing me to continue the use of a single key for all the locks. There are various threads on removing the tumblers from the saddlebag locks, but I couldn't find one on the seat/helmet lock. I think the locksmith charged me $10 for his 10 mins. Anyway, my suggestion would be to take them to a locksmith. They should be able to quickly troubleshoot your problem and save you the hassle.

First off,, we need to know exactly whicfh bags you have:

There are three styles of the larger bags:

1) "Old style" - These have f;at locks and use a Smasonite type sheet metal key

2) "Old style with round locks" - These are the same as the ones above but have round locks that use a key like the ignition key (oftentimes matched to the ignition key) and the face of the locks point inward.

3) "New style" - These have rubber pads attached to the front and bottom edges.

If they are round locks then you can take them apart and clean them. While you're at it you can make the bag locks work with your ignition key.

Its been raining like crazy here, almost flooding. So here are some bad pictures of the bag on my terribly soaked bike. Sitting there is my Girlfriend and I's fleet of BMW bikes -- my K75, her F650CS and the family R65 (all tarped up).




I'll try and get a better picture of the locks themselves tomorrow if this doesnt help.

Interesting, considering these locks point inwards (and Duck says they point outwards).

Look at galery of my previous K75S 1986. She has attached old style saddle bags with old style locks.
You for sure have drum locks - the way they are installed - that is another story Smile.

I have not seen them facing that way. That is a first for me.

I think you can see it here on mine, the last bike was out wards too.

You've got the #2 style bags with the round locks pointed inwards. Go to the IBMWR K bike tech pages for instructions on how to remove the lock cores. The first one is the hardest to remove . Once you've pulled that out and seen it things will be obvious to you.

Hahah, thats me actually. The girlfriend took the photos. I had to get to work without ruining my clothes and my belstaff rain gear was already soaked through (I tell you its raining!). So I found an old racing / mechanics suit and threw it on, she had quite a laugh. You'll notice the plastic over the cluster too - still trying to track down a new one and trying not to get water in the old one. I've already taped it up, but I guess I'm paranoid.
