After I had disturbed the #1 cylinder throttle setting the other day, I made a guess at where to set it. Then on the ride yesterday (see photos section) I noticed it was running terribly, coughing and spluttering, in particular backfiring on the run down. Also at idle there was a graunching clunking coming from the engine, it was truly terrifying. I have to admit it sounded so mechanical I didn't connect the 2 issues together, I just thought I'd blown a big end or the timing chain tensioner was stuffed or something. The Kspert with us (riding the F800) wasn't sure what it was either.
Anyway to cut a long story short I borrowed the Vacuum syncing meters, a 4 meter jobby, and started to fiddle, calibrated them first off one cylinder and plugged it in to all cylinders. The one I had disturbed was way off so started to adjust it, the noise got worse, screwed it the other way until the vacuums were equal and wow, the noise went away and it started running beautifully! #4 was a bit out too, so adjusted that as well, #2 was spot on.
What a difference it made! idles like a singer sewing machine now! Thanks for the advice and instructions on this, really appreciated.
So if it's rough running especially at idle get it done! Magic, feels like a new bike!! _________________ K1100RS '97

Looking forward to it-
Last year I purchased the gauges and tried to sync the TBs.
#2 couldn't be adjusted to agree with 1, 3 & 4. I then sprayed WD-40 around the base of TB and the bike's idle evened right out.
I'll be replacing the TB "boots" in the next week or so..... _________________ John & Cathy

Could you elaborate on the WD-40 please? Are you implying that it sealed a leak or crack in the boot that you will now replace? _________________ Todd Glasier in Charlotte, NC

WD-40 used to be* flammable. I think he's implying the boot is cracked, leaking air and needs to be replaced.
(* WD-40 is not longer flammable) _________________ 93 LT (x2)

As FD stated- WD-40 momentarily seals a crack in the rubber boot- and very briefly allows that TB to experience normal vacuum. A quick way to diagnose why one TB can't be sync'd with the others.
Ordering 4 new "boots" this week. Rubber on a 17 y.o. bike is aging and has been through many heat cycles. _________________ John & Cathy

Hmmm... what I thought was that if you're using older, flammable WD-40, that it gets sucked in and there's more fuel for combustion which helps that cylinder. Maybe it does temporarily seal it. _________________ 93 LT (x2)

Drake,
Either way it would improve the mix on that cylinder- if it was the flammable WD, it would offset the extra air coming through the cracked boot. If it was the non-flammable WD it would very briefly "seal" the cracked boot.
Being that I could NOT get the TBs sync'd (and I know that this can also be the result of bad valve adjustment- which I am doing in the next few days..) I have to figure that the rubber parts of the intake are faulty.
But thanks for helping me explain the WD stuff
