I have read how to adjust the TPS etc. However I am unclear as to it's function. I can't lower my idle RPMs ( 1500 rpms ) would resetting the TPS help this? This is on my 87 K75.
Thanks in advance.

TPS determines when to shut off / open the injectors. i.e. throttles shut, no petrol. If incorrectly set, fuel sent when not needed, resulting in bangs in the exhaust.
Tickover is set when balancing the throttles. If it's sitting @ 1500 then you have an air leak or it desperately needs the throttles balancing.

On K75s and K100s there is very little rotational play in the throttle position switch (it's only a switch on those bikes) and if it's positioned improperly it will hold the throttle open. I knocked one out of place on a K75 I was building and wasted almost a whole afternoon before I discovered the TPS was holding the throttle open. DOH!

Loosen the screws on it and see if that helps. Properly adjusted on a K75 you should hear a click when any throttle is applied.

What is the correct method of setting the switch on K1100s?

Thanks for your response(s).

It is not a switch on K11, it provides a precise angular position to the motronic.
Here is how to set it up: http://www.largiader.com/articles/motronic.html
For full sync: throttle body sync

Lexxol, something you should check for is a vacuum leak.
One of those sneaky buggers will raise your idle.
Check your hoses for cracks, or a loose fit.

Confused Confused Confused Confused

Good afternoon all..

Hey... while the original post was a TPS question, I noticed on my return ride from HMSP-IV that whenever I'd hit a "bridge/road" transition strip that was raised, the shock would cause the throttle to "die" just a tad and then resume. This made riding a bit uncomfortable especially where road construction was quite uneven. Could this possibly be the symptom of a faulty TPS or TPS setting ? ,,,, or does it have nothing to do with the TPS ?

Thanks in advance for any input...

Best regards........// Ernie in NH

Ernie - check the fuel pump connector plug on the left side. My bike was cutting out occasionally - Scott_ mentioned that connector - I cleaned it and haven't had any trouble since. After that, check all the connectors you see. I use Deoxit or CorrosionX.

i just had the same problem on my k75 and as i have the k11 now the k75 won't even talk to me Shocked ,,back to the prob it would cut out without a bump and my dash lights would come on,,,i would turn key off and on until dash light went from dim to bright and bike would start indicating ignition prob,,, however after electrical play time it turned out to be that very plugin mentioned by Ernie just unplugged it during my check and plugged it in and end of problem and the plug LOOKED perfect,, my bmw buddy also said that part of the ground prob thru starter could cause trouble Jeeves

Good morning Jim...

Thanks for the input... do you mean the 4-wire "connector plug" that exits the tank ? On mine, its not on the left side, but rather connects to the 'female' end coming out of the harness on the right-side just below and it=n from of the Motronic. The "little hesitation" that I mentioned is like a momentary deceleration and then just as quickly it resumes to the correct speed. Was that the type of problem you experienced as well ? Will "Deoxit" at any rate... good advice !

Hi Jim... Hi Jeeves...

My faulty spelling,,, sorry !

""just below and it=n from of the Motronic""... should read:

"" just below and in front of the Motronic""

I promise, I'll try to do better with the keyboard and not be so hasty !!

Regards again........// Ernie in NH

Ernie - I was getting anything from hesitation to complete cut off. Since I cleaned that connector, I haven't had any problems in over 2,500 miles.

Very Happy

Hi Jim...

OK !! I've scrubbed the "pins" and "sleeves" and de-oxed all 4 connections, replaced the connector/socket set back together, and now will ride it somewhere ( I-93 ) where I know there are transitions, just to test it out. Will let you ( and Jeeves ) know the results...

Thanks again.......// Ernie in NH

That was the information I needed and it is relatively easy to perform. That is once I figured out pins and positions. The switch is now in the proper position. Thanks again.
