Thanks Scott, that's where I was heading, I just wanted confirmation of my thought process.

Next step, new connectors. I wonder if 4 wire trailer plugs would suffice????

(edit) This is wierd, I have about 10 or so postings lately that show up as the "top" of a new page. This is freaking me out.

Steve, here's a pic of what I was talking about when I mentioned a generic 4pin weather proof connector.

It's even got the same 4 color wires. Laughing

Very easily picked up at your local parts store. Obviously don't use those blue tapping connectors, unless you want more problems. Rolling Eyes

That looks just like a trailer wire connector ( I should know as I've hooked up quite a few trailers lately!), I'm on it!

Gday Steve
This my first post but have been looking at the site for a few years.I have a 93 model RS that had your problem. The intermittent fuel pump can be hard to troubleshoot. As you say your pump can't be faulted when powered up so likely not that. More likely the fuel pump relay ( can be taken out and bench tested) or the connection on the motoronic computer. From memory the computer gives both power and earth to the fuel pump relay when the ignition is turned on. I ended up cleaning and coating all the connections in the system with dielectric grease. This fixed it. If not the pump is a bosch commonly used in fords ( EA FALCON Australian ford ) and the computer is very expensive genuine only.
Good luck

Thanks for the suggestions. I've replaced the relay and tried a new pump (the ford substitute). I think I've got it down to a wire from the connecotr to the fuel sending unit. I'll be replacing the connector today and see if that's it.

I'm losing my mind,

I went to double check everything again this morning before I started cutting things and it all is working correctly! I'm getting a 0 ohm reading from the green pin in the connector to the sender unit solder and to the end of the wire where it would attach to the fuel pump.

I connected the leads to the fuel pump and plugged the connector in and the pump fires right up when I tun the key. I'm right back where I started from without knowing for sure what the issue is!

I could have sworn I was not getting any reading when testing the green pin to the yellow power wire at the pump, but I was testing so many different things and just learning how to do it that I wasn't sure, which is why I was double checking things this morning.

I guess I'll still replace the connectors anyway since I'm pretty sure I was not getting a connection there yesterday.

Since the power was back, I thought I'd hook everything back up and start the bike up and see what happens.

I'm getting the whirr at the pump, but it sounds a bit strained, and the bike won't start. I pulled the pump out of it's bracket in the tank and pulled the hose off. When I turn the key on, it whirrs but no fuel is coming out. If I hit the starter, still no fuel comes out. So maybe it is the pump after all??

I did power up the pump a few times when it was out of the tank (2X), that wouldn't mess it up, would it?

Steve - I don't think it would hurt the pump to run it for a few seconds.

Running it out of the tank for short periods won't hurt it. What so you think happens when you run out of gas?

OK, had the wires reversed, so it was sucking instead of pumping, d'oh!

But, good news, got the pump wired correctly and it was running and the bike started right up, ran for a few minutes and then the pump cut off again, the bike died. I quickly pulled the pump out and tested the wires, no continuity between the green pin and the yellow power lead to the pump, just like yesterday.

I am getting the 12v at the connector (motronic side) between the green wire and the brown wire for a few seconds telling me that the motronic is sending the signal correctly, it's just not making it to the pump.

So, I finally feel pretty confident it's an issue in the tank side connector. I'm going to go ahead and order one from EB and wait for it.

Thanks again for everyone's help.

Sorry to hear about your ongoing FRUSTRATION. There might actually be an ICD9 psych code attached to BMW K1100 bike repair Tx.

I did the one step program to deal with it.

Lets see - if there was alcohol involved, as would seem likely, then it would be in the 291, 'Alcoholic psychoses', series. Otherwise probably 298.9, 'other non-organic psychoses, unspecified psychosis'

Or maybe it is 797 - I'll leave you to look that one up Very Happy

Well, it's not the plug in connector. While I'm waiting for the a new connector from EB, I decided to just cut the old one off and direct connect the wires, it didn't work, still getting no conectivity between the green wire and the solder joint where it becomes the yellow wire (to the fuel pump).

So, the issue must be in the wire or more likely in this connector,

But I don't see where this can come off, it's seems pretty permanent.

Can I get a new wire with this connector, or do I have to get a whole new sending unit and replace the whole thing?

It appears to be a whole unit for $104.00 from Max. No. 10 in this diagram.

Replace the sending unit....I'm still thinking motronic plug, but then again I have not been riding enough to see if mine is really fixed. Drake should have a replacement. Does anyone have a sender out, that they can check the wires before replacement?

Joe

Well, I think the motronic is fine because I always get the 12v signal for 3-4 seconds beween the green wire and the brown coming from the motoronic when I turn on the key. But the continuity bewteen the green wire and the sender unit has been in and out, corresponding with the pump not firing up.

Found a used unit for $45 on Ebay and he also had a clutch cable which I've been meaning to get as a spare. So I bought them both.

Hopefully this will cure my bikes issues.

I'd like to ride to HM without constantly worrying about when it's going to die next.
