Hi
Just been to a bmw rally close to prague and went into prague to have a city sightsing when the -96 K11LT refused to start.
No sound from the petrolpump, tested to open and close the sidestand reaction from the tempmeter but none from the pump.
Moved the emergency switch same reaction on the tempmeter.
Stucked at a hotel with the bike in a garage. All workshops closed until wedensday exept in Dresden germany but thats 100km north.
Have my tools but no voltmeter. Any tips on what to check and try to do.
Can it be any relay.
As you understand its kind of urgent.

Hi Sven,
Everytime my bike has had those symptoms it has been the connector under the fuel tank that powers the fuel pump. On my 97 LT, it is under the right-rear corner of the tank. It's rather difficult to clean the pins without removing them from the connector.
Good Luck. I hope your problem is no more complex than that. _________________ '02 - GL1800

Hi
Thanks
Tooked that connector appart and plugged it in again a couple of times yesterday no change.
Will go to Dresden tomorrow and pick up the pump and probably a relay and some wires just fotr testing everything before diging into the full tank.
Why did I filled it up, well could be stucked in worser places than in Prague just at the east end of the famous cars bridge, and a lot of cultural things like old houses counsert and a nice lady at my side. |

The post above is a good place to start.
Test the fuel pump:
1) Remove the four screws holding the gas cap on.
2) Disconnect the fuel pump power wires. (7mm and 8mm nuts)
3) Remove the fuel pump by unsnapping the two plastic clips at the front and rear of the vibration mounting ring collar.
4) Put 12V to the smaller diameter terminal on the fuel pump and ground the larger diameter terminal.
I'd suggest doing this off of the bike as you don't want to risk sparks in the gas tank.
Here's the layout for the relay box:
------------
|.............|
|...|....|...| <-----
|.............|
|.....__....|
|.............
|.....__....|
|.............|
------------
You can test the relay by applying 12V and a ground to the relay terminals indicated by the arrow above. Polarity does not matter. You should hear the relay click when voltage is applied.
Or you can just swap it with a known good relay like the horn relay to see if that makes the fuel pump work. _________________ 93 LT (x2)

Thanks
I will first put the ignition on and a finger on the pumprelay while open / close the sidestand then shift the relay with the horn relay.
Should be a good test of the relay.
Luckely I had some docs and manuals on my server
http://wbsp.arb.ltu.se/EuroPrez/docs/k11-help/
and 3 wires to remove the radio.
Looking for a list of the fuzes.
Time to go to the bike and do some tests before the trip tomorrow to Dresden.

Hi
Went to Dresden by Train to get a new pump.
Installed it still silent, took out the relay and connected direct to auxilarry connector at the coils, now the pump runned. ( also the old pump b ut what a diffrent in sound ). Cleaned the connectors to the relay and sprayed it with some cleaner and guess it started.
Off we went in the nice sun and not so chilly temp 35+C.
Next challange the ABS was off. Well with dry tarmac and resonable speed we continued to Salzburg ( austria ) and Chur ( swiss ).
In Chur I went to my favourite delar Motos Obertor, who found the battery in perfect condition despite 4y of service. They connected the ABS unit and found that there had been an error in the rear wheel speed unit.
Had to reset it twise and now that's also running. They where so kind to tell me a roadside trick to reset it. Shure it's in FAQ here. Else I will describe it.
While waiting for the repair we got some saftey things like 1.5L camel bag spine protector for my girlfriend with kideny belt.
Next day off to Lausanne.ch and Colmar.de
From Colmar we took the alssas route du vine where I recorded a lot of twisty roads and old towns. Really something to se just a tips.
The videos will be out on the net when I come home after next weekend.
Now it's only the break warning lamp that will not come off.
All the best and ride safe.

It is good to see you here Sven-Erik, I remember your posts on the IBMWR list in ages past If you ever run into Carlo Ratzdorfer please tell him I said "Hello".

Hi Ted
Remember you from the IBWR list, nice to hear from you.
In fact I'm in Carlos brand new office in Antwerpen.
He sends he's best to you.
Will be here for the weekend discussing all the essensial in life and sort out all the problems in the world with Carlo and then go back to Lille on sunday. Departure for the way home on tuesday ( appr. 2500km ).
And yes we got some pictures from the pump fixing in Prague.
All the best.

Some photos from the wrencing in Prague
http://picasaweb.google.se/luletibbe/Summer20104FixingBikeInPrague#
PS, used a wire from the axilary plug at ign. coils and the tail lamp bulb as voltmeter.
Also used that wire to check connection to the pump by taking out the relay and connect the wire to the socket.
PSS. it's an advantage to have some spear 10A fuses. |
