If you look even closer, it's on the top of the radio antenna for the LT.
I thought the same thing last year when I saw it. 
I also can see how it would protect a cover from having a hole poked in it from the antenna.

ah ha, my bad, I thought it was a life sized martian, not a tiny one close up. But then I guess we don't actually know how big martians are yet do we !!
