Hi there

I've searched this forum and other tech resources but I can't find a topic on how to set the timing on a K1100. I have Clymers and the official BMW manual and they both refer to a special electronic black box which appears to detect the opening/closing of a circuit. Has anyone produced a write-up on how to do this without any special tools?

Try to look for information regarding problems with Hall sensor on Oilheads. AFAIK when there is an trigger signal from Hall sensor the signal line is pulled down to ground. That is about static ignition adjustment.
Take a look on this pages:
http://skylands.ibmwr.org/tom/tech/k100_timing.html
http://www.ibmwr.org/ktech/k-bike-ignition-timing.shtml
Some input on 4 cylinders K engines and dynamic ignition tune up.

Best regards,

Pull the cover off of the Hall Effect Sensor and shoot a timing light at it off of the #1 spark plug lead and you can see the timing marks. It's kind of hard to see with the wheel on though. Just eyeballing it statically and centering the notch on the right side (looking from the front - rider's left) usually gets it pretty darned close.
