|

Hi Folks,
As I was returning from Morton's Saturday on my new to me 1994 K75RT I immediately noticed that the tach seemed stuck. I had parked it in the sun for about 4 or 5 hours. On the way home (with the sun over my shoulder the whole way) it moved a little, seemed to get to about 4,200 RPM and stick there. As I was taking my suit off after getting back to the garage (in the shade) I noticed it was back to zero and when started and revving, it had magically returned to normal.
I am thinking I have the dreaded warped face.
Is there an easy fix for this? Can I replace just the tach face? Temper it back to flat in the oven? Just ignore it?
Thanks folks

A couple of the guys here have taken the instrument pod apart, v_e_r_y carefully removed the needle, and glued the tach face back down.
I can see the face on mine warp in the sun - but so far not enough to hit the needle.
I suppose you could figure out a sun shade for it... _________________ Jim

No need to replace anything. Pull the guts out. Glue a small strip of something in the upper left hand corner as a spacer to push it back from the lens. _________________ 93 LT (x2)

I have a similar problem with my tach face. I wish I had known when I was installing Drakes LED's last week.....Oh well, the clock that I thought was fixed is Fooked....so it is only a matter of time 'till I pull the cluster again. For now I am attempting a patented JO repair.....black tape. _________________ 1994 K1100RS

Hi, Ted,
I never had the problem with the '95 K75RT nor the '94 K75A/3. Both Paul Glaves and I have the same problem with our '95 K75RTP's (one serial number apart). Our problem is with both the tach and the speedo. I've taken my instrument cluster apart a couple of times and have made and installed a shim to move the "glass" slightly farther away from the needle and face. It didn't help. I then put a drop of sewing machine oil onto the needle shaft and made sure it got to where the shaft passes through the face plate. I couldn't get a drop onto the tach shaft. So far the speedo has not stuck again, BUT it hasn't been hot enough (my opinion) to really give it a test. If it doesn't work, I purchased a new complete instrument cluster (on closeout) from MotoBins for GBP125 or, including shipping, a little over $200. That's my next move if the speedo still sticks. _________________ Ride Safe,

Haha - good one! That pic was taken on top of Cadillac Mountain by Larry Fears, holy crap that was 12 or 13 years ago!
Has anyone ever taken the tach face off and tried to re-temper it? Maybe stick it between a few paper towels and hit it gingerly with an Iron until it is flat again? _________________

By the time you get it off, you might as well just glue it back on... _________________ Jim

If Ted's is like mine. The tach face has not delaminated, it has just warped. I was thinking of hitting it with a heat gun and gently forming it back flat. The iron trick might work? _________________ 1994 K1100RS

Yep, it shows no delamination at all, matter of fact if the tach weren't sticking I couldn't tell by looking at it anything was wrong. If I had to guess, mine is bowing out in the middle catching the needle not at an edge but where it joins the pin in the middle of the face.
I think the iron trick might work, we'll have to see. I know metal can be tempered back into shape, I have no idea if plastic will do the same? Can't hurt to try though
Does anyone know if the cluster on a K75RT can be removed without having to remove all the tupperware? _________________

Yes on a K75RT. The S is the one where you have to tear the whole bike apart. _________________ 93 LT (x2)

Just wanted to let you know, I had to tear apart my cluster again today. (turn signal bulb was inop)....loose connection I guess. Anyway, I took a black pen, cut it to about 3/8" long and split it lenthgwise. I put a small drop of glue on it, to hold it against supports, so that it could push down on the tach face when I put it all back together, the tach face was nice and flat.
Easy fix....give it a try.
Sorry, I did it at my desk at work today, no pics.

Don't remind me about the S, on Friday evening I pulled the cluster out of my K75S to clear condensation after our rainy spell. The bottom of the cluster was swapped with a spare vented base from an old K11 unit. And I did my best to get all the segments working in the clock.
I ended up sticking a cheapo LCD clock module on the outside of the cluster and spending most of saturday am putting everything back together and getting the fairing mating nicely. WHAT A JOB _________________ ******************************

If it's not too late, may I suggest a dessicant pack (silica gel) in the clocks before reassembly. Works for me.l _________________ Regards Tim,
