My rear brake has been lightly dragging for awhile and I can't seem to find the issue.

A few weeks ago I took apart the cailiper and pulled out the seals and covers and o-rings and such and cleaned them all real well. I found some sand-like grit under one of the seal covers and I was hoping that was the issue. No luck, still a slight dragging. So then I ordered a caliper rebuiild kit and replaced the seals, covers, and O-rings and still no joy.

When the bike is on the center stand and I rotate the rear wheel, I hear a very slight scrapping sound, it's certainly not binding, just lightly dragging. Do you guys hear any brake scrapping when you rotate the rear wheel? Even just slightly?

I went out for a ride today and it was quite hot here, about 91 degrees. After about 15 miles I pulled over and felt the rear disc, it was hot, almost too hot to keep a touch on it, and the rear end was real hot also. So I'm thinking this is from the dragging brake.

My next thought is a MC rebuild, or at least diassasemble and clean. I'm hoping it's not the brake lines, although they're old, the M/C seems to work well. No leaks and I can see the fluid pumping out, and then returning slightly when the pedal is released during bleeding.

I've checked the clearance at the foot pedal and it's fine, I even opened it up a bit just to be sure.

I'm also a little concerned that maybe the final drive is causing this heat, possibly due to, or a cause of my U-joint failure last year(?). If I spin the rear wheel as hard as I can while on the center stand, it only spins about 1 1/2 times before stopping. I tried this when I had the rear caliper removed and got about the same rotation. Does that sound about right?

Any other thoughts??? I'd like to get this sorted out before heading out for HMIII next week.

My rear wheel takes much effort to get a turn and a half rotation and the brake pads are creating some noise, but I think that's pretty normal.

Mine has slight drag also. I noticed that when I last changed the brake pads that one pad was more worn than the other. The same is occurring with the new pads.

I had thought about investigating the cause - initially just to check that both pistons are free. Have not got around to this yet.

I did a M/C rebuild due to leakage a couple of years back and this has been fine since.

To be honest I think there is a slight level of drag on most disc/pad brake systems.

Thanks for the reassurances. Reading the posts of peoples bikes catching on fire from rear brakes binding has me a little spooked.

The pads are worn pretty well, there's only about 3mm left (1.5mm is the minimum),so I've got a new set coming, thinking maybe that'll push the pistons back in a bit and they'll operate better.

You will have an indication of real drag when you pull in the clutch and you start slowing down(more than coasting) without touching the brake pedal or levers.
I'd be looking for something then.

Mine also have a slight(very slight) pad drag on the rear disk.
