I pull my final drive from underneath my K1100 today, and found 2 disturbing finds...
first the pivot bearing looked like this:
clearly showing 3dents on the upper/inner ring.
the cage (containing the rollers) also shows signs of un-roundness. but this is hard to show on camera.
The most disturbing bit was the fact that the bit in the next picture had clear up and down play (the bit hanging out was fine, the uni-joint seems ok, but the bit that is deeper in the housing (the other fork of the uni joint) could move!)
i mean this bit here just visible:
Is there play allowed in there? |

There should be no play here. It looks like the main pinion bearing [I stand to be corrected on the name of this bearing as I am away from my manual] has gone - badly. I would have thought that the degree of wear demonstrated would impact on the viability of both drive gears as they will have been wearing against each other at an incorrect angle. Looks like time for a replacement final drive.
Presumably you removed the drive because you were experiencing some fault, noise etc? Has there been a loss of oil - or metal fragments in the oil?
The pivot bearings normally do show signs of wear such as needle imprints after releatively low mileage however they should not be showing the 3 "dents" as in your pic. _________________ K1100RS Special Edition 1997

there are no strange noises...
i do not seem to get the uni joint off the pin that drives the big gear... (in order to check the state of the bearing a bit better.
there is no oil leaking (a very small amount of "Sweating" under neath the rubber booth.) |

Stick a big screwdriver on the U joint and whach the other end of it pretty hard. It takes a fair amount of force to spring the circlip. _________________ 93 LT (x2)

i got it out.
the axel that remains is solid... no (ok ok ... a tiny amount) of play.
the play in the movie is clearly in the spline connection.
BUT..
the splines are ok.
the circlip is ok.
there seems to be no radial (rotating) play.
there appears to be a lot of wobbely play (what you see in the movie)... |
