Hi,
My right side cover (k1100 RS) has an worn out connector (which connects to the rubberized stud under the seat). I mean the long, manually detachable cover that sits under the seat.
The half open thingy is just worn out (no more springiness and a crack that is not helping either.
i am wondering if others have simular problems and i am looking for a repair...
some pictures to make it more clear:

Mine have both done the same thing. I find that the two end studs hold it just fine and I have ridden thousands of miles without and issue. Just make sure the two ends are tight and you are good to go. I have found that rubber tubing goes over the ends nicely. _________________ 1997 K1100LT

Unfortunately, it does not stay in place on mine⦠on various occasion I had to juggle the side panel into place while driving down the highway.
That is not an option for me at the moment.
I would really like to replace the "pincer". But I have no experience with this kind of work and am looking for options and ideas. |

Mine are also broken, they crack and then one side breaks off. I also find that just the 2 end caps hold them on nicely. I took a dremel and made the notch a little more round and with a piece of tubing on the pin, they hold quite well.

| I bought a K11RS a few weeks back. Both of the side panels were held in place by a complex network of plastic zip ties and small bungee cords and black electrical tape. |

Pity you aren't in Brisbane, would be more than happy to fix it for you. Some epoxy resin in the crack (go on OTG, do your best with that one ) and some thin layers of glass on the inside of the clip, clean it up with a dremel, would fix it perfectly. I have some thin woven glass that would be perfect for it, use it on the boat all the time.
Do you know anyone who has fibreglassing skills? It isn't all that hard. _________________ K1100RS '97

Mine broke as well. Epoxy (Araldite) didn't last. Then tried plastic welding, which made the clips brittle and they broke again.
Solution that seems to work. Go to hardware store and get a packet of 13mm (1/2 inch) spring steel "Tool Clips". Also get some "speedy clips" (also known as body clip or body nut) and 5mm (or imperial equivalent) round shouldered allen head bolt. The tool clip base is pre-drilled. Make some spacers (about 7mm) out of aluminium or plastic. Drill hole through spacers to suit bolt.
Cut off old broken plastic clips (with a hacksaw) flush with raised square section. Fit clip to raised square section. Fit Tool clip, bolt and spacer to the body clip. Put some rubber grease on the 3 side cover mounts. I no longer try to force the middle mount on. I slide the back mount on first, then line up the middle mount, slide it over and onto the front mount.
cheers,
Andrew

Mega-epoxy will last about 4-5 years but it's elasticity/malleability eventually kicks in. I redid mine a few weeks ago with mega-epoxy reinforced with bent nails. It ain't pretty but it'll llast onger than my last fix. And nobody can see it.
I think two or three layers of fiberglass would work better but it's more work and more smelly.
You'd think those fuggin engineers at BMW could figure how how to attach a side panel to a motorcycle after 60 years but I guess not. (OTG mode off) _________________ 93 LT (x2)

They were too busy working out ways to have the FD fail from what I can see! _________________ K1100RS '97
