I'm trying to mount a RAM mount GPS bracket into one of these two holes. I assumed these two holes were made for mounting mirrors or something similar and the RAM screws would fit, ...not!

I realize the larger hole is for the now defunct BMW throttle control screw, but what about the other one next to the M/C?

The supplied M8 x 1.25 x 20mm almost fits in the larger hole, it screws in about 1.5 turns than stops, so the thread is not matching up. I can't find anything that will screw into the other smaller hole.

Are these just odd size/thread screw holes and what could I get to go into them?

I realize I have to be careful about the throttle screw hole and not have a screw too long that it binds the throttle.

Just me but I prefer to have the GPS on the clutch side so I don't have to reach across to operate it while my right hand is on the throttle/brake. Why not use the mirror mounting hole on the clutch perch?

On my RS, I trimmed the dash pad (very cheap part as far as BMW stuff goes) on the clutch side and used a TomTom handlebar mount.

Well, I find that on the left side, it blocks the speedo, but I guess I could use the speedo on the GPS. I don't mind the tach being obscured.

Also, that hole doesn't apear to be threaded, is it? I guess I could just use it as a through hole and put a longer bolt through there with a lock nut...

Steve, I have read somewhere, maybe even here, get a base plate mount and some longer screws for the top of the mc cover and put it there.
Not saying I would do it, but some have as an alternative option.

I've noticed that where I have mine mounted the Tach is blocked from about 6K to 10K. Which is OK for me as I don't run it up past 6K regularly.
All of the lower indicator lights are still visible.

Steve - I have mine on the left - so I can push the buttons while I'm riding. Smile

Ram makes a mount that fits on the left side and doesn't block anything...

Yep, I got that mount, I see you used the "mirror" relocation bracket, I was just going to go through the hole directly, but maybe I need to try your set up.

I don't have as much room under the windshield as you do on the LT, so I need to move it over and lower to clear the windshield when turning the handlebars.

Thanks for the tips.

Steve,

Just before I made the switch to the C-14, I had fabricated a mount to place my new Zumo just below the top edge of the RS fairing and attached to it. It is a gadget guy knock-off, and simple to fab.

I felt that by attaching it to the fairing I wouldn't have to allow extra space for it to clear the fairing when the handlebars go to right lock. Also I was able to bury the wires under the trim piece inside the fairing.

Just a thought.

John

Crap! I was really hoping to get one of these - anyone happen to have a part number for it, or maybe even a good used one laying around they would sell me? Smile

Phil Marvin's off at the mines, but he had at least one sitting around which he gave to me; he might have another.

All taken care of, thanks Smile

Amazing how I look at my bike as a modern piece of machinery (and compared to most motorcycles, it still is) yet it is now almost 16 years old!

Oddly enough I discoverd the throttle lock screw hole is threaded SAE. I had to get a longer mounting bolt to attach my RAM mount on the left side and Lowe's didn't have that size in metric any longer than what came with it, 40mm. So, I got a stainless steel hex head cap screw in 5/16" x 2".

While I was fiddling with it, I thought I'd try it in the throttle lock screw hole and sure enough, it fits in there just fine! Odd, why would that be SAE when everything else on the bike is metric?

I think I'll still try mounting on the left side anyway due to some of the comments about accessing easier with the left hand. That RAM mount is so versatile, I can postion it just about anywhere to still see the gauges, etc., pictures to follow.

It's possible that a previous owner tapped it out to SAE.

Got the RAM mounted on the clutch side by using a longer bolt with lock washer and lock nut.

I also got the RAM Aqua Box medium wide to put my non-weather proof Garmin 255WT in. Damn, this thing is huge, they ought to call it the Aqua Locker, I could put a small flat screen TV in there!

It was the size listed as the one to get for the 255WT, but now I'm thinking maybe the "small" would have worked, but the inside height of the small box lists as 2.90 and that's exactly what the GPS measures, so maybe not...

I also orded a cradle mount for the 90% of the time when I don't ride in the rain.

I'm thinking I'll use this the most.

I really like the ram mount, with the two balls and articulating arm, you can postion it in a hundred different ways.

The hole on the right lever mount next to the master cylinder is a LEFT HAND thread so you will have great dificulty finding anything to fit. I used this hole to mount my radio control unit but drilled the hole and fitted an insert to bring it to 8mm which is readily available in many forms.

I'm putting handlebar mirrors on my K75 with a K1100 front end and using the hole by the master cylinder. The thread direction is normally threaded, at least on the master cylinder I'm using. I know because I just cut the threads on the mirror base to be able to mount it. M8x1.25.
