Another forkin' fork bites the dust. I should have been nicer to Malcolm about his forkin' issues, this is definitely a case of karma getting back at me..... Laughing

Well at least there's plenty to read here on the subject already, hope I don't have as much trouble as others!! And yes I'll stick boots on at the same time. The photo doesn't really show the oil well.

BTW I noticed this after a lovely breakfast ride up the mountain this morning. Even in the middle of winter the bikes were out in droves! Mind you it was a lovely warm morning :-

Resized for FD

Nah, that business of getting the little wedgie things in and out just look
way too hard. I am happy with the BMW springs really, all the handling
issues got fixed by getting the water masquerading as oil out of it a few
months ago. I know you want me to try the Racetech springs but I don't
see the need yet. I could be convinced otherwise Smile

So I can see why the seals went west. The dust covers in the top of the
sliders had half of the seal dragged backwards ie pointed down. So
whoever replaced them last really fucked it up bigtime. It meant that dust
and crap was being sucked into the seals rather than being kept out.
There was even rust on the circlips.

I guess the person who replaced the seals last didn't lube the dust seals
before sticking the sliders back on so they got half of the seals folded
back. Mind you it is a bit hard to check!

BTW a trap I got caught by, the screws for the ABS sensor aren't allen
keys, they are torx!! DAMHIK....DOH! Fortunately I still have the
Desmoparts ones to use.

Lastly, the circlips are easy peasy to get out once you figure out the ends
are tapered. So one end is set up to get a little screwdriver to lever the
end in, then get a second one behind the ring itself and out it comes.
What is a bit more difficult is finding it amongst all the freaking camping
gear on the other side of the garage Smile

This photo should help that.

So off to the BMShop for seals and new dust seals and boots tomorrow.
Hope they've got them!! Don't want to pay Morgan and Wankers prices!!

edit: resized for FD....

Just to be on the safe side, don't forget to check the fork bushes while it is in bits.

Yeah good point. There are spots on them that are down to the brass. Is that an automatic replace situation?

Is that the RH fork with the leak ?
Same side as mine, it was a piece of ol tacky to fix UNTIL I decided to do replace the LH side. Sad

BTW I've found a great photo showing how the parts fit on Anton Largiader's site
http://www.largiader.com/tech/k11forks/

It anwers my question on how to assemble the bag-o-bits BMW sent back.

Motorworks have the bushes at a good price.
I'm scratching around to find Rancho shock covers in SA, If there is no luck I'll speak to a beeg dirt bike dealer close to home.

No it was the left, but I will do both sides anyway. When I get the seals tomorrow I will enquire as to how to ensure the dust caps should go on without doubling backwards. Need to get it running for a ride my Tuesday!

All sorted. Although a few lessons learnt.

You definitely can't put all the seals in the slider then try and slide it up onto the leg, you gotta take the leg out, put the slider on and then put the seals on over the leg and into the slider with it on. Really hope I didn't stuff the seal on the one I tried!

Undoing the triple clamp clamps is easy enough to do without removing any bodywork.
